Chemical process industries, applications resistant plastics

This book defines specialty elastomers as heat-, oil-, fuel-, and solvent-resistant polymers. Each chapter examines individual elastomers in terms of development history, chemical composition, structure, and properties as well as processing methods, applications, and commercially available products. Krupp Kautex BFT, blowmoulding foam technology, has reached commercial fruition and its first industrial-scale application will be at a new company, BFT Plastics in Northern Ireland, where a machine to mould pallets and transport boxes will be installed later this year. The BFT process uses a chemical blowing agent to foam HOPE to increase rigidity and impact resistance and improve heat insulation. 

Membrane processes are used to filter liquids. Instead of conventional filter materials (e.g. filter cloth, filter candles,) microporous membranes are employed with molecular size pores. First the industry had to learn how to manufacture membranes with controlled pore sizes. To optimise the filtration capacities specific filter structures had to be designed in which the liquid followed well defined flow patterns on one side of the membrane. Many different systems were developed for the varied applications, all having their advantages and also disadvantages, i.e. plate modules, tubular modules, spiral wound membranes, etc. Research and development in this field is far from being exhausted. Various types of multilayer dies, such as the TRD, have successfully produced coextruded LCP-thermoplastic film, sheet, and thermoformed articles. These products are expected to penetrate the high barrier plastics market valued at more than 700 million per year for a variety of food, beverage, medical, and industrial packaging applications. Because of their very low permeability to oxygen and water vapor combined with high temperature and chemical resistance, coextruded LCP films should find applications in this market.
