Plastic processing technologies casting

Many of the intermetallic compounds are very difficult to process into thin sheets because they exhibit very low ductility at ambient temperatures. Powder metallurgical techniques coupled with tape casting have been employed to process these materials into continuous thin sheets which, after removal of the polymer binder and plasticizer, can be sintered and rolled to full density with a sequence of cold work and annealing steps. The use of tape casting has recently been reported for the production of iron aluminide (FeAl) thin sheets with excellent properties. We believe that this processing technology can be used for other intermetallic compounds, especially for the production of continuous thin sheets. 

Polycarbonates can be processed with common plastic manufacturing processes. Technologies like injection molding, extrusion and casting bear good shaping opportunities. In comparison to transparent polymers like PMMA or PET, polycarbonates show extraordinary transparency, strength and endurance.

For planar sensors manufactured by multilayer technology, the recently developed ceramic tape casting process was improved further [17, 18]. ZrOz powder is mixed into an organic matrix of binders, plasticizers, and solvents and is tape cast onto a Mylar supporting tape or a steel belt After drying, the ceramic tape is separated from the support tape and the flexible green tape can be punched to form individual substrates.
