Plastics Processing Applications

Sprayed, vacuum-deposited and plated coatings can be applied to most metals and to many non-metals, e.g. vacuum deposition is applied to many substrates including plastics spray application can be used for coating fabric, plastic and paper. Hot dipping and other diffusion processes are dependent on the nature of the substrate for the properties of the coating. Most commercial applications of aluminium coatings are on iron and steel with smaller quantities applied to aluminium alloys and plastics. 

Another method of reducing the quantity of plastics that has been used in certain products is to use engineered plastics with higher performance than the lower-cost commodity plastics. When applicable, this approach permits using less material to compensate for its higher cost. With a thinner-walled construction there could also be additional cost savings, since less processing heat, pressure, and time cycle is required. 

Vertical boilers are particularly suited for smaller heating and process applications, such as hotels, laundries, food processing, adhesives, plastics, andpharmaceuticals manufacturing, or in standby operations, because steam output is relatively low (usually only up to 100 boiler hp or 3,450 lb/hr) but the time taken to reach full pressure is short. 

An application of fire retardants in plastics solves the problem of plastics flammability efficiently but usually creates problems with plastics processing and with plastics properties. In this paper we intend to evaluate various solutions to these problems.

By 2000, the alpha olefin market had grown to more than 3. billion pounds. Technology had brought down the cost of producing them and simultaneously, a broad range of applications for all the alpha olefins expanded rapidly—surfactants, synthetic lubricants, plasticizer alcohols, fatty acids, mercaptans, comonomers, biocides, paper and textile sizing, oil field chemicals, lube oil., additives, plastic processing aids, and cosmetics. 

The furnace process involves injecting low end fraction of cmde oil, eg, Bunker Fuel C, into a heated chamber. The temperature, shape of the injectors of the oil, rate of injection, and other factors are controlled to produce black fillers of different particle size and structure. The particle size and structure control the reinforcing character of the carbon black. There are 30 common grades of carbon black used in the mbber industry. There are numerous specialty grades produced, and several hundred are used in plastic, conductive applications, and other uses. 

This anhydrous zinc borate is recommended for use in engineering plastics processed at temperatures higher than 300°C which is the upper limit of Firebrake ZB processing temperature. It is reported to be an effective smoke suppressant in chlorofluoropolymers for plenum cable applications.66 Recently it was claimed that this anhydrous zinc borate can replace antimony oxide (or sodium antimonate) completely in high temperature polyamide applications. Like its hydrated analog, this anhydrous zinc borate can also improve CTI, thermal stability, and the color stability of polyamide containing halogen sources.67 68... 

Substances that are also used as additives for plastic processing and applications will be treated in Chapter 3. In the following the two most important substance classes in the first category are discussed.
