Privilege

A great deal of tax money is spent in support of fundamental research, and this is often defended as having an intrinsic virtue. To take the present topic as an example, however, the study of just how molecules adsorb and react on a surface is fascinating and challenging, yet the tax-paying public should not be asked merely to support the esoteric pleasures of a privileged few. The public should expect the occasional major practical advance whose benefits more than pay for the overall cost of all research. The benefits in the present case come from the discovery and development of catalytic processes of major importance to an industrial society. [Pg.728]

Ilia, which became an integral part of our life. Returning some of our good fortune thus is a privilege and a small expression of our gratitude. [Pg.233]

The log(k/ko) value for 4-isopropyl-2,5-dimethylthiazole is twice that expected if the curve were linear, which implies a rate constant 6.5 times smaller than expected. This result can be explained by the existence of a privileged conformation, induced by the presence of the methyl group in the 5-position and that has a lower reactivity (258). This result also leads to a limitation in the use of Tafts Eg parameter to cases where the environment of a substituent does not induce particular conformation for this latter (258). [Pg.389]

Subcontracts enable you to choose the degree of control exercised over your subcontractors. With suppliers, your choices are often limited as you have no privileges. Control over your suppliers is therefore exercised by the results of receipt inspection or subsequent inspections and tests. If your confidence in a supplier is low, you can increase the level of inspection and if high you can dispense with receipt inspection and rely on in-process controls to alert you to any deterioration in supplier performance. [Pg.322]

I have incurred many debts of gratitude to Prof E. J. Corey of Harvard University, who envisioned this project in the summer of 2002. What he once told me — The desire to learn is the greatest gift from God. —has been a true inspiration. Furthermore, it has been my greatest privilege as well as a pleasure to work with a stellar collection of contributing authors from both academia and industry. Some of them are world-renowned scholars in the field some of them have worked intimately with the name reactions that they have written some of them even took part in the discovery of the name reactions that they authored in this manuscript. As a consequence, this book truly represents the state-of-the-art for Name Reactions in Heterocyclic Chemistry. We will follow up with the second volume to complete the series on heterocyclic chemistry. [Pg.566]

Ipatieff was born in Russia in 1867. As a member of the privileged (i.e., noble) class, Ipatieff prepared for a military career. Early on in his education, Ipatieff gravitated toward the sciences, and in particular chcmisti y,... [Pg.678]

Stephenson derived immediate satisfaction from his mechanical accomplishments, there is some evidence that he resented or disdained the public acclaim through his rejection of invitations to join the Royal Society or to accept Knighthood. Despite his brilliance, his relative late education kept him from feeling socially accepted. This may have started with a grudge as early as 1815, when he lost out in a patent dispute with a more privileged rival over a safety lamp that George invented. [Pg.1088]

When attempting to settle a dispute the heading Without Prejudice can be used in correspondence, which, subject to the rules of privilege, cannot be used in court. [Pg.98]

As you pay homage to the diversity of behavior that emerges across the spectrum of all possible representations of all possible systems, you inevitably conclude that (1) there can be no objectively privileged system for which the emergent structures are real, and suc.h that all other structures, for all other derived systems, are less real, and (2) reality, or the emergence and identity of particular sets of objects and their interactions, is wholly dependent on the arbitrary dynamical labels that prescribe a particular system. In short, reality lo.ses its objectivity, and takes on a more tentative, ineffably relative facade. You begin to wonder if the best that you can do to get a hold on objective reality is to look for whatever remains fixed -i.e. what is universal - within the space of all possible representations, all possible rules, and all possible emergent structures. [Pg.702]

P should also minimize distinction.s between conventionally distinct but atomic. primitives (such as space, mass, time, etc.). The vision is to take one more step along the metaphoric road remove jnan from the center of the universe —> remove all privileged frames of reference —> remove all absolutes —> remove all distinction between space and matter—r remove all distinction ( ) Start by eliminating the tacit assumption that whatever physics is self-organizing itself out of the soup of the current crop of physicists is the physics of this universe in short, go from a solipsistic phys-ics to a fundamentally relativistic physics, wherein even physics itself becomes a set (an infinite hierarchical set ) of self-consistent world-views rather than a prescribed set of exactly/uniquely prescribed laws operating independently of all observers. [Pg.704]

What finally saw the book through to its conclusion I confess to not having a solid answer. However, I am fairly certain that, had it not been for a serendipitous intervention of Jungian synchronicity, the book would never have been completed. In my professional capacity as a research analyst for the US Navy (working for a think tank that also does work for the Marine Corps), I had the distinct privilege and honor of getting to know a truly visionary military thinker Lt.Gen (Ret) Paul van Riper. [Pg.833]

There is evidence to suggest that drug-like structures exist in clusters in chemical space (privileged structures). Identification of these can greatly enhance success in screening. [Pg.172]

Some 20 years ago, I was privileged to share in writing a book on the descriptive chemistry of the 4d, 5d, 4f and 5f metals that included these eight elements within its compass (S.A. Cotton and F.A. Hart, The Heavy Transition Elements, Macmillan, 1975). This volume shares the same aim of covering the descriptive chemistry of silver, gold and the six platinum metals in some detail at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate study. [Pg.405]

In last Sunday s episode of Sex and the City, the now mortal Mr. Big met with Carrie Bradshaw at 21 for a steak and a private talk in much the manner that J. J. Hunsecker in Sweet Smell of Success and Addison DeWitt in All About Ere also enjoyed the publicity of 21 s privilege. [Pg.119]

These drugs may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Observe caution when performing hazardous tasks. Do not drive unless die adverse reactions of drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision are not significant. Driving privileges will be given by the primary health care provider based on seizure control. [Pg.262]

The imidazole ring is a privileged structure in medicinal chemistry since it is found in the core structure of a wide range of pharmaceutically active compounds efficient methods for the preparation of substituted imidazole libraries are therefore of great interest. Recently, a rapid synthetic route to imidazole-4-carboxylic acids using Wang resin was reported by Henkel (Fig. 17) [64]. An excess aliphatic or aromatic amine was added to the commercially available Wang-resin-bound 3-Ar,M-(dimethylamino)isocyano-acrylate, and the mixture was heated in a sealed vial with microwave irradi-... [Pg.97]

Make the relationship public if it is to continue. This avoids the spreading of harmful rumours. At the same time, it is strongly advisable to discontinue the formal mentoring relationship, simply because others might fear that the mentee will now receive privileged treatment. [Pg.138]

Informing non-mentored employees of the nature of mentoring relationships - i.e. what is their purpose and how do they work - and making explicit that mentors are not in the business of helping their mentees to get promotions and privileges, and, once again,... [Pg.144]

There are addifiortal situations in which ethical concerns can influence the dynamics of a mentoring relationship a fundamental aspect of the mentor-mentee relationship is that each has privileged access to the other. Mentees may be encouraged to disclose information about current or potential problems that could be damaging to their ovm career or reputation if widely revealed. Likewise, mentors might share a personal disaster to help mentees anticipate and avoid a similar pitfall. In either case, both parties have a professional obligation to the relationship to not exploit the other s disclosures. [Pg.145]
