Think tanks

What finally saw the book through to its conclusion I confess to not having a solid answer. However, I am fairly certain that, had it not been for a serendipitous intervention of Jungian synchronicity, the book would never have been completed. In my professional capacity as a research analyst for the US Navy (working for a think tank that also does work for the Marine Corps), I had the distinct privilege and honor of getting to know a truly visionary military thinker Lt.Gen (Ret) Paul van Riper. 

A more limited, but potentially quite useful, step would be to establish in the United States a nuclear energy "think tank" where alternative nuclear futures could be analyzed critically by participants from universities, industry, government agencies, and private policy groups. The goal would be to further the safety and economy of nuclear power.

But on March 3, 1933—the day before FDR took office—a think tank calling itself Technocracy Incorporated formed to spread its ideas through the Depression-riddled country. The editor of Wonder Stories prefaced the first part of Schachner s Revolt by noting ... 

The Tax Foundation, a nonprofit tax think tank, estimates that America spends 140 billion complying with the current tax code—a cost that would be reduced 94% by instituting a flat tax. 

In the first example, the writer tells readers Dr. Auerbach s current and former positions, both of which demonstrate that he is an expert on the subject of taxes. In the second example, the title of the organization—The Tax Foundation—tells readers that the organization is devoted to the subject. The writer describes it as a think tank, which suggests that it seeks out and employs experts on the subject. 

Media pundits, think tanks, and consultants who are ideologically sympathetic to the pharmaceutical industry, or are economically beholden to it, have echoed and amplified the pharmaceutical industry s concerns over cross-national price discrimination in sometimes hysterical tones. It may be well to review briefly the merits and demerits of these critics sometimes vehement arguments, because their voices often are highly influential in government circles. 

Gest, Ted. Little Think Tank Big Impact. U.S. News World Report, vol. 115, December 6, 1993, p. 26. Describes the efforts of Josh Sugarmann, founder of the Violence Policy Center. The organization has issued research reports that zero in on emerging controversies such as those over assault weapons and gun dealer licensing. 

A gun control think tank, research education, and advocacy group. 

Readers frequently write to me, asking all kinds of questions, ranging from mathematics to religion. Sometimes I answer the questions directly. At other times, if my schedule is too busy, I refer fans to my Internet Think Tank, which has over 600 members. Almost any question can be answered in my Think Tank, where we collectively function as a hive mind to solve problems. 

I recently asked members of my Pickover Think Tank to consider a concept that had been on my mind for many years. My contention was that somewhere inside the digits of pi is a representation for all of us— the atomic coordinates of all our atoms, our genetic code, all our thoughts, all our memories. Given this fact, all of us are alive and happy, in pi. Pi makes us live forever. We all lead virtual lives in pi. We are immortal.

In 1985,1 left OTA, and during 1986 through 1990,1 worked at a consulting firm, Environ, and a middle-of-the-road think tank, Resources for the Future. My book Dioxin, Agent Orange was published in 1986, and I continued to do research related to dioxin and became more and more convinced that few if any Vietnam veterans had any exposure to dioxin beyond the level common in all people, and that there was no credible evidence that environmental exposures to dioxin caused health effects.36... 

The RAND Corporation is one of the world s oldest and best known think tanks. Over the years RAND has produced numerous studies and reports on various aspects of substance abuse. Every clearing and cleaning procedure should have some step or steps to estimate the amount of any hazardous or reactive residual material within the equipment. In addition, there should be some backup plan if the amount of residual appears over a predetermined amount. Smart-thinking tank designers plan ahead. Many more individuals are specifying...

Consider drugs like ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers, which can reduce the risk of heart attacks. As Daniel Callahan, cofounder of the Hastings Center—a think tank in the exurbs of New York City, specializing in health care ethics—writes in his new book. His writings on chemical warfare, in fact, sound quite familiar to twenty-first-century ears they strike the same dispassionate tone adopted today by defense intellectuals at think tanks such as the RAND Corporation and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Whether calculating the effectiveness of missile defenses or analyzing the metaphysics of nuclear deterrence, their writings, like Haber s, allow little room for the human horror of warfare.
