In contrast to the cold isostatic pressing process, the hot process can readily employ powders having spherical or noninterlocking particles. The powder is simply poured in and vibration packed into a container of desired shape. The powder mass is then simultaneously compacted and bonded during the treatment. [Pg.184]

The dry-press process is used to make good quaHty face brick, ie, brick used on exposed waHs. Very Httie water is added to the clay, less than 10% by weight. Many physical and process constraints limit the cycle time, where cycle time was defined as the time to the maximum exotherm temperature. The obvious solution was to wind and heat the mold as fast and as hot as possible and to use the polymer formulation that cures most rapidly. Process constraints resulted in a maximum wind time of 3.8 minutes where wind time was defined as the time to wind the part plus the delay before the press. In very stubborn cases, another treatment is used. Inks and pigments are fixed and the artifact is immersed in a bath of polyethylene glycol (PEG 400). An entire codex can be placed in two or three large plastic tubs and kept there until the parchment is soft and pliable. This procedure can take days or weeks. The parchment is removed and blotted and pressed in the same manner as the treatment in ethanol and water. If the parchment becomes translucent while in the bath, the phenomenon will disappear with the blotting and pressing process. [Pg.45]
