MarkownikofT s rule The rule states that in the addition of hydrogen halides to an ethyl-enic double bond, the halogen attaches itself to the carbon atom united to the smaller number of hydrogen atoms. The rule may generally be relied on to predict the major product of such an addition and may be easily understood by considering the relative stabilities of the alternative carbenium ions produced by protonation of the alkene in some cases some of the alternative compound is formed. The rule usually breaks down for hydrogen bromide addition reactions if traces of peroxides are present (anti-MarkownikofT addition). [Pg.251]

The market penetration of synthetic fuels from biomass and wastes in the United States depends on several basic factors, eg, demand, price, performance, competitive feedstock uses, government incentives, whether estabUshed fuel is replaced by a chemically identical fuel or a different product, and cost and availabiUty of other fuels such as oil and natural gas. Detailed analyses have been performed to predict the market penetration of biomass energy well into the twenty-first century. A range of from 3 to about 21 EJ seems to characterize the results of most of these studies. [Pg.13]

Extensive carbapenem and penem antibiotic research has been ongoing since thienamycin was discovered in 1978. However, only the imipenem-cilastatin combination has become a commercial product. Launched in 1985 in the United States as a broad-spectmm hospital product under the name Ptimaxin, this product had worldwide sales of some 300 million in 1988. Since disulfoton is produced by only one manufacturer (SRI 1994), to maintain confidentiality, its recent production volume is not known. Similarly, data concerning the import and export volumes for disulfoton in recent years are not available. The generation of OH in 03-alkene reactions has important implications for tropospheric chemistry. Thus the 03-alkene reactions could be important free radical sources at dusk and during the night when pho-tolytic sources of OH are minimal (e.g., Paulson and Orlando, 1996 Bey et al., 1997 Paulson et al., 1998). For example, Paulson and Orlando (1996) predicted that 10-15% of the total radical production may be from 03 alkene reactions in a typical rural area in the southeastern United States. As seen in Fig. 6.6, this reaction is expected to be most important at night. [Pg.199]

There are very few data available on alkane isomers above C7 for comparison of petroleum or any other natural product. Some analyses, however, are available for the Cs isomers from alkanes from crude oils. Predicted results from the Fischer-Tropsch equation with / = 0.1 are given in Table II along with analyses of Cs alkanes from two crude oils (2, 4). A very definite exception to the predicted values appears in Table I, namely, the predominance of 2-methylheptane over 3-methylheptane. This observation is contrary to the prediction of the equation. According to scheme B (1) other Ck analyses from crudes made available to the author by M. J, O Neal show the same predominance cf the 2-methyl isomers. A total of four Ch analyses available for comparison represent crudes from western and southwestern United States. As mentioned in (8), 11 out of 14 analyses through the Ct s showed the reversal the three that did not have the predicted reversal also came from the Southwest. It would be of interest to have analyses of Cs s in crudes from other parts of the world in order to study this reversal. It seems much more logical to assume that productivity will continue to increase. The question can be approached in another way by adopting a year 2000 population forecast of 35 million or one which trends in fertility, mortality, and immigration suggest. On this basis, gross domestic product per capita would be 6200 or almost two and a half times 1970 s 2600. Will technological advances allow Canadians to raise their productivity this much in 30 years Canadian productivity was doubled in the last 30 years, so the forecast seems to be within the realm of possibility. As another perspective, competent economists predict that in the United States a figure of 6000 per person will be reached as early as 1985. [Pg.224]

There are many predictions of petroleum resource and supply models and many of these predictions have failed (Linden, 1998). However, the reality is that the United States is one of the largest importers of petroleum since domestic production is only about 64% of what it was in 1975. Domestic production of crude oil has fallen from approximately 10,000,000 barrels a day in 1975 to 6,400,000 at the end of 1998. At the same time, the total daily imports of foreign crude oil and products into the United States at the end of 1998 was approximately 10,000,000 barrels. Thus, imported crude oil and products represent approximately 61% of the daily crude oil requirements in the United States (Oil Gas Journal, 1998 Pellegrino, 1998). Tier I assessments can be refined by adjusting for the actual percent of crop treated. The USEPA considers the percent of crop treated of tolerance residue levels a Tier II exposure assessment. This adjustment is made by mathematically decreasing the tolerance value by a fraction equivalent to the percent of crop treated in the United States. Although the percent of crop treated adjustment can reduce exposure dramatically if the triazine is used only on a small percent of the total crops planted, the use of tolerance values still provides a very conservative exposure estimate. In a Tier II assessment, livestock and poultry feed tolerances can be used to estimate the maximum amount of triazine-treated feed ingested by livestock and poultry and to predict the transfer of residues to edible animal products. [Pg.416]

Worldwide demand is expected to grow at 3% to 5% per year from 2000 through 2005. Global acrylamide capacity was about 550,000 tonnes per year in 2002. World acrylamide demand was estimated at 400,000 tonnes in 2002 so capacity utilization is 80% to 85%. Growth in the United States was 5% per year from 1989 through 1998.
