The Britter and McQiiaid model was developed by performing a dimensional analysis and correlating existing data on dense cloud dispersion. The model is best suited for instantaneous or continuous ground-level area or volume source releases of dense gases. Atmospheric stability was found to have little effect on the results and is not a part of the model. Most of the data came from dispersion tests in remote, rural areas, on mostly flat terrain. Thus, the results would not be apphcable to urban areas or highly mountainous areas. [Pg.2345]

In the eastern United States, acid rain consists of 65% sulfuric acid, 30% nitric acid, and 5% other acids. In the West, windblown alkaline dusts buffer the acidity in rains occurring over many rural areas, whereas in urban areas 80% of the acidity is due to nitric acid (28). Average pH in rainfall over the eastern United States for the period April 1979-March 1980 was less than 5.0, with some areas less than pH 4.2 (29). The lowest annual pH recorded was 3.78 at De Bilt, The Netherlands, in 1967, and the lowest in an individual rainfall was 2.4 at Pitlochry, Scotland, on April li) 1974 (30). [Pg.152]

Under the hghtest winds, the air rises over the warmest part of the urban core, drawing cooler air from all directions from the surroundings (Fig. 17-21). Subsidence replaces this air in rural areas, and a closed torus (doughnut)-shaped circulation occurs with an outflow above the urban... [Pg.266]

Because there are multiple sources of most pollutants in urban areas, and because the meteorology of urban areas is modified so that the extremes of stability are avoided, concentrations tend to vary much less in urban than in rural areas. [Pg.335]

Property tax abatements encouraging companies to locate and expand in suburban and rural areas. [Pg.514]

Yet despite all the problems associated with the 190 billion miles logged by truckers each year, trucks are vital because they offer an iinmatchable service door-to-door dehveiy. Companies are located eveiy-where from city centers to distant suburban locations and rural areas, so the door-to-door railway delivery is not even an option for most businesses. Even if the United. States made massive investments in railway... [Pg.514]

Mains gas is widely available throughout the mainland of the United States. Thinly populated rural areas do not have access to mains gas although liquid petroleum gas from a central supply may be available. All major industrial areas are within the gas supply area, and less than 15 per cent of domestic dwellings are outside this area. [Pg.262]

By number count the great majority of particles in the outside air are likely to be less than 1 pm. By weight, these small particles will account for a very small proportion of the sample. A filter with a high efficiency measured by weight of particles trapped may be almost transparent to the small ones. Very high counts can be found in rural areas from pollen or agricultural activities. [Pg.450]

These results clearly demonstrate (a) the effect of moisture in increasing the corrosion rate six times in the rural areas compared with the arid areas... [Pg.817]

In towns which are not heavily industrialised, the life of a paint film may be about equal to that in rural areas, but, because of traffic disturbance, dirt collection from soot and dust will be noticeable earlier. The use of selfcleaning (chalking) paints can overcome the premature loss of some of the decorative effect without noticeably reducing protection. [Pg.610]

A representative sampling that reflects a food sample should be planned. In the case of analysis for the Food Composition Database, nationwide composite samples should be prepared. Consideration should be given, among other factors, to the major regions of the country, the different brands of processed foods available, and consumption in industrial and rural areas. ... [Pg.450]

This means that Australia, Malaysia and Venezuela have to invest significant human and financial resources in inspections of the supply channels in their respective countries in order to ensure compliance with the requirements of good distribution practice (GDP) and the provisions of the pharmaceutical laws. Arranging human resources and schedules for inspection is even more arduous when the distribution outlets are widely dispersed through the rural areas. [Pg.20]

In a rural area, where leachate from a hazardous waste disposal site has contaminated an aquifer currently used by only a few residential wells, it may appear more cost-effective to replace a water... [Pg.4]

Although the pharmacist may only infrequently have contact with this particular dosage form, there has been a movement to give some feed additive drugs veterinary prescription status, which has been done in several European countries. This may have future implications to those pharmacists practicing in rural areas. [Pg.725]

The site is an old battery and cleaning solution storage facility located in a rural area. Improper handling and storage activities at the site during a ten-year period, from 1968 to 1978, resulted in soil and groundwater contamination. [Pg.645]

Because of the heightened interest in bioremediation of TBA, additional information was obtained about several of these sites. These data, provided in the online database, show that several sites were able to reduce the concentration of TBA, sometimes to less than its site-specific cleanup level. For example, at several sites in Texas, including Turtle Bayou Easement Area and Rural Area Disposal Area, in situ bioremediation was used in conjunction with other technologies such as SVE, and in situ thermal desorption. At these sites, the concentrations of TBA were reduced to less than its cleanup goal, with concentrations after treatment ranging from 100 to 1000 pg/L. At the Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, California, in situ bioremediation was used in a biobarrier configuration, and the concentration of TBA was reduced from >1000 to <5 pg/L. [Pg.1021]

While no projects in the dataset were identified explicitly as using in situ thermal treatment, several projects discussed under other technologies involved these types of components. For example, one site in Texas discussed under bioremediation (Rural Area Disposal Area, Liberty, Texas) used a combination of technologies that included an in situ thermal treatment component. [Pg.1045]

The facts of pesticides negative effect on human health, especially in rural areas, show that there is no coincidence of, and no underestimating, some factors - the range of effects is too large. Pesticide impact has affected the health not only of agricultural workers using pesticides, but also the health of those who did not. [Pg.89]
