Power grid

In practice, elimination of axial current flow requires relatively fine segmentation, eg, 1—2 cm, between electrodes, which means that a utihty-sized generator contains several hundred electrode pairs. Thus, one of the costs paid for the increased performance is the larger number of components and increased mechanical complexity compared to the two-terrninal Faraday generator. Another cost is incurred by the increased complexity of power collection, in that outputs from several hundred terminals at different potentials must be consoHdated into one set of terminals, either at an inverter or at the power grid. [Pg.416]

In a large power station, connected to a transmission network through a power grid, system disturbances are a common feature. Foi details see Section 17.5. [Pg.186]

But Ihe GT is connected to a power grid and the grid to a transmission system. If we consider the fault level of the transmission system as 40 kA, as in Table 13.10, then Ihe maximum fault that can occur on the LV side of Ihe GT will be governed by Ihe fault level of the transmission system (40 kA) and not the GT (84 kA). [Pg.352]

The governor can be set to make the machine run at a constant speed, even on load variations, with extremely quick and almost instantaneous speed control, and thus maintain a near-zero AN. In a parallel operation they can also control load sharing automatically and accurately. Power grids, receiving power from different sources, are extremely susceptible to frequency variations. Even a small Af of the order of 0.5 Hz, may cause the system to trip. A fast-actuating governor with low response time (as low as 0.5 second) can overcome such a situation by quickly regulating the speed of the PM. [Pg.500]

Delayed reclosing may be adopted where the system has large interconnections (mesh system) as at a power grid, and where loss of one phase may not cause a loss of synchronization in such a duration and hence restore the transient stability of the whole system. [Pg.559]

The motor-generator ean either produee or absorb power. In some FCC units, the expander horsepower exeeeds the power needed to drive the air blower. In this ease, the exeess power is transmitted to the refinery power grid. If the expander generates less power than required by the blower, the motor-generator provides the power to hold the entire train at the desired speed. [Pg.153]

There are many reasons for significant investment in FCC power trains and, thus, power train maintenance. These power recovery machines handle catalyst-laden gas at high temperature. Because the recovery system is connected to the processing plant, the steam pipe network and the electrical power grid, a power train upset is likely to rapidly extend from the FCC unit to the entire plant. [Pg.464]

Corex process. The Corex or Cipcor process has integral coal desulfurizing, is amenable to a variety of coal types, and generates electrical power in excess of that required by an iron and steel mill which can be sold to local power grids. A Corex plant is in operation in South Africa, and other plants are expected to be operational in South Korea and India. [Pg.126]

The Loss of River Water is initiated by loss of plant power grid and river water pump house equally. Response to loss of river water involves event recognition, shutdown, and water conservation. Loss of grid includes recovery modeling based on industry-wide (utility) experience... [Pg.421]

An electric power substation is a facility that provides a junction between parts of the power grid. The substation s functions, critical for the proper operation of the power system, include the interconnection of power lines from different parts of the system the monitoring and control of system operating conditions and the protection of the power system equipment. [Pg.428]

Facilities using renewable biomass to generate electricity currently produce enough power for about 7 million American households per year.30 Many more biomass generation plants are not on the public power grid, but produce electricity and heat energy for manufacturing operations, primarily in the forest products industry. [Pg.23]

Although an FC produces electricity, an FC power system requires the integration of many components beyond the fuel cell stack itself, for the FC will produce only DC power and utilize only processed fuel. Various system components are incorporated into a power system to allow operation with conventional fuels, to tie into the AC power grid, and often,... [Pg.304]

In the electric power industry, open sources of information—such as product data and educational videotapes from engineering associations—can be used to understand the basics of the electrical grid. Other publicly available information—including filings of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), industry publications, maps, and material available on the Internet—is sufficient to allow someone to identify the most heavily loaded transmission lines and the most critical substations in the power grid. [Pg.126]
