Power factor control

It was observed in Chapter 4 that capacitor banks must be selected and applied based on power system harmonic studies. This is necessary to eliminate conditions that can actually amplify the harmonics and create conditions that can render the situation considerably worse. One means of providing leading reactive power is by the use of synchronous motors. Synchronous motors applied for power factor control are called synchronous condensers. A synchronous motor normally draws lagging currents, but when its field is overexcited, the motor draws leading reactive currents (Figure 6.11). By adjusting the field currents, the synchronous motor can be made... [Pg.151]

Laser desorption to produce ions for mass spectrometric analysis is discussed in Chapter 2. As heating devices, lasers are convenient when much energy is needed in a very small space. A typical laser power is 10 ° W/cm. When applied to a solid, the power of a typical laser beam — a few tens of micrometers in diameter — can lead to very strong localized heating that is sufficient to vaporize the solid (ablation). Some of the factors controlling heating with lasers and laser ablation are covered in Figure 17.2. [Pg.111]

Power Supplies and Controls. Induction heating furnace loads rarely can be connected directiy to the user s electric power distribution system. If the load is to operate at the supply frequency, a transformer is used to provide the proper load voltage as weU as isolation from the supply system. Adjustment of the load voltage can be achieved by means of a tapped transformer or by use of a solid-state switch. The low power factor of an induction load can be corrected by installing a capacitor bank in the primary or secondary circuit. [Pg.127]

Electrical Applications. Plastics are used for electrical insulation, conduit and enclosures, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices. The most widely used plastic for wire and cable insulation is flexible, plasticized PVC, which constitutes well over half the market in insulating wires for buildings, automobiles, appHances, and power and control lines. Polyethylene is also a factor. Higher performance plastics such as nylon and fluoropolymers also play a smaller role in this area. [Pg.333]

Electrical. The plant electrical system is sometimes more important than the steam system. The electrical system consists of the utihty company s entry substation, any ia-plant generating equipment, primary distribution feeders, secondary substations and transformers, final distribution cables, and various items of switch-gear, protective relays, motor starters, motors, lighting control panels, and capacitors to adjust power factor. [Pg.227]

Field current is an important control element. It controls not only the power factor but also the pullout torque (the load at which the motor pulls out of synchronism). For example, field forcing can prevent pullout on anticipated high transient loads or voltage dips. Loads with known high transient torques are driven freqiiently with 80 percent power-factor synchronous motors. The needed additional field supplies both additional pullout torque and power-factor correc tion for the power system. When high pullout torque is required, the leading power-factor machine is often less expensive than a unity-power-factor motor with the same torque capabihty. [Pg.2485]

Automatic correction is always recommended to eliminate manual dependence and to achieve better accuracy. It also elimintites the risk of a leading power factor by a human error that may cause an excessive voltage at the motor and the control gear terminals. [Pg.765]

Not only the buildings themselves, but an allowance for equipment and stocks within the buildings must be included in the cost estimates, such as maintenance shop power equipment, control laboratory analytical equipment and reagents and, largest of all, the thousands of warehouse equipment spares, fittings, and supplies. For feasibility cost estimates, such items are factored from experience. [Pg.229]

Selecting the SMPS controller IC. The important factors within this application that affect the choice of switching power supply controller IC are MOSFET driver needed (totem-pole driver), single-ended output, 50 percent duty cycle limit desired, and current-mode control desired. The popular industry choice that meets these needs is the UC3845B. [Pg.117]

The VDUs (visual display units) in both control rooms were under-utilized for response to and control of abnormal events, in comparison to other industries. The control room computer had the capability to give the technicians considerable flexibility and power in controlling both productivity and safety factors offshore. However, this power was not utilized. [Pg.339]

Synchronous generator type is in use for all generating applications up to the highest ratings (660 MW and above). The machine is operated at synchronous speed and the terminal voltage and power factors of operation are controlled by the excitation. [Pg.205]

This chapter introduces the basic items of design and specification for the principal systems and components of an electrical industrial installation. Electrical supply systems are discussed with regard to interface with the supply authorities and the characteristics. Salient features of switchgear, transformers, protection systems, power factor correction, motor control equipment and standby supplies are identified and discussed together with reference to the relevant codes of practice and standards. The equipment and systems described are appropriate to industrial plant installations operating at typically 11 kV with supply capacities of around 20MVA. [Pg.210]

Capacitors as bulk units can be connected to the supply busbar via a fuse switch, molded-case circuit breaker of air circuit breaker. In this type of installation control is purely manual, and in cases of a reasonably constant load and where the amount of power factor correction is limited such a manually controlled system is perfectly adequate. The supply authority may, however, require to be informed that a capacitor bank is permanently connected to the supply. Capacitors are more generally connected either in banks controlled from a VAR sensitive relay or across individual loads (e.g. motors). [Pg.221]

It would be difficult to overestimate the role that the polyether antibiotics have played in the development of organic synthesis, particularly in the area of acyclic stereocontrol. These molecules have inspired many spectacular achievements in organic synthesis, achievements that have dramatically expanded the power and scope of the science. In fact, it would not be inaccurate to attribute much of our understanding about the factors controlling acyclic stereoselectivity for such fundamental processes as hydroboration,5 epox-... [Pg.186]

Intramolecular interaction is a powerful factor that controls molecular architecture, particularly in the case of geometrically flexible molecular systems. The existence and energies of intramolecular classical hydrogen bonds and their role in chemistry and biochemistry are well known. They stabilize molecular conformations, promote short- and long-range proton transfers, participate in the creation of three-dimensional structures of large molecules and play a fundamental role in the phenomenon of molecular recognition. [Pg.85]

The equilibria involving protons and the substances which bind them are among the most important in dairy chemistry. The ionized and ioni-zable components of milk are in a state of rather delicate physical balance. Certain treatments which alter the state of dispersion of proteins and salts are reflected in the status of the protons. Thus the intensity (pH) and capacity (buffer power) factors of the acid-base equilibria have come to be widely used in processing control. [Pg.410]

I n the design of an electrodialysis plant, economic and technical aspects are powerful determinants. In general, economic factors control the quantity of membranes required, and technical considerations govern their arrangement. [Pg.227]
