Quite naturally, novel techniques for manufacturing composite materials are in principal rare. The polymerization filling worked out at the Chemical Physics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences is an example of such techniques [49-51], The essence of the technique lies in that monomer polymerization takes place directly on the filler surface, i.e. a composite material is formed in the polymer forming stage which excludes the necessity of mixing constituents of a composite material. Practically, any material may be used as a filler the use of conducting fillers makes it possible to obtain a composite material having electrical conductance. The material thus obtained in the form of a powder can be processed by traditional methods, with polymers of many types (polyolefins, polyvinyl chloride, elastomers, etc.) used as a matrix. [Pg.140]

The ductility of GRT-polyethylene blends drastically decreases at ground rubber concentration in excess of 5%. The inclusion of hnely ground nitrile rubber from waste printing rollers into polyvinyl chloride (PVC) caused an increase in the impact properties of the thermoplastic matrix [76]. Traditionally, ultrafilters have been manufactured from cellulose acetate or cellulose nitrate. Several other materials, such as polyvinyl chloride and polycarbonate, are now also used in membrane manufacture. A vast number of polymer compounds are available commercially. Previous work hod shown that low temperature coke is formed from cools hooted to between 450° and 500° C. by a process of nudeation and growth of spherical bodies in the plastic vitrinite. An essentially similar process has now been found to occur with coke-oven and petroleum pitches, with polyvinyl chloride, and with some polynuclear hydrocarbons, all of which yield carbons which grophitize readily at high temperatures. The process is probably general for the initial stages of formation of such carbons from the liquid phase. At times, low- or high-intensity blending alone can produce a suitable product for use by the fabricator. Wax concentrates may be in the form of prills, bars, flakes, or granules. Prills are very small spherical pellets, usually made from a pigment blend and wax. They may be blended, like dry colors, or dispensed by a metering device at the throat of the extruder. If they are blended, it is best to use a powder resin, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), so they do not sift to the bottom of the container.
