Polyvinyl chloride resin, because of its inherent thermal instability and wide range of applications, requires us to develop additive recipes based on specific application and processing requirements. Typical additive packages include stabilizers, plasticizers, waxes, processing aids, pigments, and mineral additives. [Pg.349]

Polyvinyl chloride can be shaped into clear, soft flexible tubing and sheets with the aid of using plasticizers such as diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). Polyvinyl chloride resins are used for children s toys, automobile seat covers, and for catheters used for intravenous transfusion of blood and nutrients in hospitals and homes. When DEHP was suspected of leaching out of the products, and of being a carcinogen, substitutions were developed with polyvinylacetate and polyethylene. However, these substitutes are not yet totally satisfactory, as they cannot be steam sterilized, and they are not as clear and flexible as PVC. [Pg.304]

Dichlorvos is a particularly versatile organophosphate since it can be incorporated as a plasticizer into polyvinyl chloride resin pellets and can be released slowly from the undigestible pellets as they pass through the digestive tract. This allows for a therapeutic concentration against parasites all along the digestive tract. [Pg.133]

POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC). [CAS 9002-86-2], The manufacture of polyvinyl chloride resins commences with the monomer, vinyl chloride, which is a gas, shipped and stored under pressure to keep it in a liquid state bp —14°C, fp —160°C, density (20°C), 0.91. The monomer is produced by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with acetylene. This reaction can be carried out in eidier a liquid or gaseous state. In another technique, ethylene is reacted with chlorine to produce ethylene dichloride. This is then cataiytically dehydrohalogcnatcd to produce vinyl chloride. The byproduct is hydrogen chloride. A later process, oxychlorination, permits the regeneration of chlorine from HC1 for recycle to the process. [Pg.1356]

Vinyl dispersions are fluid suspensions of special fine particle size polyvinyl chloride resins in plasticizing liquids. When the system is heated to about 350F., fusion (mutual solubilization of resin and plasticizer) takes place. The dispersion turns into a homogeneous hot melt. When the melt is cooled below 140F., it becomes a tough vinyl coating with excellent physical properties such as flexibility, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and excellent aging. [Pg.407]

Nearly 97% of vinyl chloride consumption is for polyvinyl chloride resins and more than half of the PVC applications are in construction related uses. [Pg.170]
