Polarity Study

The polarity of a liquid-liquid interface is an important factor to consider for heterogeneous reaction kinetics, as the solvent environments at the interface are different from those in bulk media. In 1998, Wang et al. reported a second [Pg.9]

Ishizaka et al. have also studied the polarity of a liquid-liquid iuterface but by time-resolved TIR fluorimetry [35], In bulk solutions, the nonradiative decay rate constant of the polarity sensitive probe sulfoihodamine B (SRB) increased with an increase in a solvent polarity parameter [ . . (30)], and this relationship was used to estimate the polarities of water-oil interfaces. The nonradiative decay is given by this pseudoempirical equation  [Pg.10]

Another approach proposed by Steel and Walker is based on the concept of molecular rulers [39]. These rulers are solvatochromic surfactants composed of an anionic sulfate group attached to a hydrophobic, solvatochromic probe by alkyl spacers of different lengths. The probe is p-nitroanisole, an aromatic solute whose bulk solution excitation wavelength monotonically shifts by more than 20 nm from 293 to 316 nm as the solvent polarity or static dielectric constant varies from 2 for cyclohexane to 78 for water. Zircon belongs to the tetragonal system and is a positive uniaxial. The typical form shows the ill and the 110 planes. A combination of time-resolved polarized emission and one-color time-resolved polarized absorption (transient bleach) studies facillitate assignment of the polarizations of the observed nanoparticle transitions. Excitation-wavelength-dependent emission polarization studies indicate the presence of an overlapping xy polarized transition in the bluer part of the 290-315-nm range, as indicated in Fig. 5.
