Metal oxides, sulfides, and hydrides form a transition between acid/base and metal catalysts. They catalyze hydrogenation/dehydro-genation as well as many of the reactions catalyzed by acids, such as cracking and isomerization. Their oxidation activity is related to the possibility of two valence states which allow oxygen to be released and reabsorbed alternately. Common examples are oxides of cobalt, iron, zinc, and chromium and hydrides of precious metals that can release hydrogen readily. Washing light hydrocarbons with water is a common refinery practice. It finds application on the feed to catalytic polymerization plants. It is used to remove any entrained caustic from the mercaptan removal facilities as well as any other impurities such as amines which tend to poison the polymerization catalyst. Another use for water wash is in alkylation plants to remove salts from streams, where heating would tend to deposit them out and plug up heat exchanger surfaces. In order to reduce or eliminate off-line sample preparation, multidimensional chromatographic techniques have been employed in these difficult analyses. LC-GC has been employed in numerous applications that involve the analysis of poisonous compounds or metabolites from biological matrices such as fats and tissues, while GC-GC has been employed for complex samples, such as arson propellants and for samples in which special selectivity, such as chiral recognition, is required. Other techniques include on-line sample preparation methods, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)-GC and LC-GC-GC. The concentration of a solute has a considerable effect on the viscosity of the fluid and so on the surface convective resistance to heat flow. There is little published data on these effects, so applications need to be checked from basic principles. Industrial alcohol (comprising ethyl alcohol with a statutory addition of methyl alcohol to render it poisonous) may be used as a secondary refrigerant, either at 100% concentration or mixed with water. The fluid has a low viscosity and good heat transfer, but is nowlittle used on account of its toxicity and the fire risk in high concentrations. This paper surveys the field of methanation from fundamentals through commercial application. Thermodynamic data are used to predict the effects of temperature, pressure, number of equilibrium reaction stages, and feed composition on methane yield. Mechanisms and proposed kinetic equations are reviewed. These equations cannot prove any one mechanism however, they give insight on relative catalyst activity and rate-controlling steps. Derivation of kinetic equations from the temperature profile in an adiabatic flow system is illustrated. Various catalysts and their preparation are discussed. Nickel seems best nickel catalysts apparently have active sites with AF 3 kcal which accounts for observed poisoning by sulfur and steam. Carbon laydown is thermodynamically possible in a methanator, but it can be avoided kinetically by proper catalyst selection. Proposed commercial methanation systems are reviewed. [Pg.10]
