Electric road vehicles have been reduced to insignificance, as mentioned already by, vehicles with combustion engines. Another electric vehicle — the electrically driven submarine — presented a continuous challenge to lead-acid battery separator development since the 1930s and 1940s. The wood veneers originally used in electric vehicles proved too difficult to handle, especially if tall cells had to be manufactured. Therefore much intense effort took place to develop the first plastic separators. In this respect the microporous hard rubber separator, still available today in a more advanced version, and a micro-porous PVC separator (Porvic I) merit special mention 28]. For the latter a molten blend of PVC, plasticizer and starch was rolled into a flat product. In a lengthy pro-... [Pg.256]

Rubber separators have a relatively low porosity ( 50 - 55 percent) and thus high acid displacement and electrical resistance. Furthermore, they are brittle and for this reason difficult to handle in larger sizes. In order to balance this disadvantage, an adjustment to a lower degree of crosslinking has been attempted the result was a corresponding increase in susceptibility to oxidative attack. [Pg.274]

Polyethylene separators offer the best balanced property spectrum excellent mechanical and chemical stability as well as good values for acid availability and electrical resistance have established their breakthrough to be the leading traction battery separator. Rubber separators, phenolic resin-resorcinol separators, and mi-croporous PVC separators are more difficult to handle than polyethylene separators their lack of flexibility does not allow folding into sleeves or use in a meandering assembly in addition they are more expensive. [Pg.276]

Special applications are often governed by different priorities as already discussed in relation to golf carts, the low water loss and the delay in antimony poisoning in heavy-duty service of a forklift are of eminent importance, with the result that rubber separators remain the preferred product there. Submarine batteries offer a different... [Pg.276]

First, a length of primacord must be securely attached to the explosive end of the blasting cap from outside the rubber container so that only the thickness of the rubber separates the two. [Pg.17]

Rubber separators have good voltage characteristics, the ability to retard antimony transfer, properties to retard dendrite growth, and good electrochemical compatibility. Due to the hydrophilic properties of the rubber composition, the separators are highly wettable and renewable for the dry-charging process. Paik et al. showed that AGE-SIL (sulfur cured, hard rubber) separators performed well in industrial stationary or traction batteries. FLEX-SIL (electron-beam-cured. flexible rubber separator) separators are suited for deep-cycling batteries, and MICROPOR-... [Pg.208]

SIL (a coated, glass mat and rubber separator) separators have been found to be good choice for high rate discharging or cranking applications and for various types of gel cells. Recently Daramic DC UHMW PE has demonstrated excellent performance in these applications, as well. [Pg.209]

Our work has shown rapidly that a considerable amount of knowhow is necessary to obtain a product having satisfactory processing characteristics. More particularly it is necessary to have a material that gives no matrix-rubber separation during fabrication (extrusion, injection molding, etc.). [Pg.154]

Related to particle sizing, Molau and Kesskula described the concept of type I and II occlusion [5]. The prepolymer is viscous and has a retarding effect on the phase inversion. In most cases multiple emulsions are formed after the phase inversion point. If the agitation is not extremely high these multiple emulsions survive the further copolymerization and give SAN occlusions in the rubber particles. These occlusions are called type I. Type II occlusions are formed when monomer dissolved in the rubber phase is copolymerized. Because SAN is not compatible with the rubber, separation occurs within the rubber particle, giving type II occlusions. [Pg.316]

In PME, a solid hydrophobic membrane (usually silicon rubber) separates the aqueous or organic donor and acceptor phase. PME applications are described in chapter 11 of this book. [Pg.15]

One beneficial procedme is to dissolve a speciality rubber in the (preferably liquid) polymer before it is hardened (cmed), so that the rubber separates out as dispersed particles during hardening. An alternative technique involves adding preformed solid rubber particles to the liquid resin before hardening. This has the advantage that the particle size of the dispersed phase is controlled, and the modifier does not lower the modulus, yield stress and Tg of the polymer so much, because it is largely immiscible. [Pg.68]
