CD44 could bind extracellular matrix ligands (primarily hyaluronan), which has an effect on cell behaviour regardless of their interaction with receptor tyrosine kinases, and the actin cytoskeletons can act as platforms for growth factors to participate in the function of the extracellular matrix (based on hyaluronan), in its assembly and dismantling. 

Scalability implies an ability to use the very resources that generate services in the present as platforms for future growth. Using terminology offered by March (1991), scalability represents structures and processes wherein exploration occurs as a byproduct of exploitation. Thereby, it reduces considerably the costs that a firm incurs in reconciling once separated forces for exploration with exploitation (Christensen Raynor, 2003 Thompson, 1967). Indeed, in dynamic environments, the flexibility, speed, and scope of operations required of a firm can be accomplished only if a balance can be generated between exploration and exploitation (Brown Eisenhardt, 1998 March, 1991 Tushman, Smith, Wood, Westerman, O Reilly, 2004). 

The result is that barnacles are often the first macrofoulers to colonize a protected surface.100 Once growth of barnacles on toxic metal coatings is initiated, the surface rapidly fails because barnacles act as nontoxic platforms for other organisms. As a result of these kinds of field evidence, the U.S. Navy supported basic barnacle research for almost four decades, and barnacles were the only macrofoulers included in initial studies of natural product antifoulants supported by the U.S. Navy. Most of this work was conducted by the Costlow group at the Duke University Marine Laboratory.47...

Clearly, the process described is not sufficient to create a shared performance culture, a process which takes years of joint effort. However, it is the critical first step in defining shared directions and shared modes of interaction as the platform for future growth at the level of each individual employee.

On one hand, Responsible Care is seen as compliance focused and, while considered a component of sustainability, does not currently offer the platform for embracing all of the concepts of sustainability (focus groups above Sustain Ability, 2004). Responsible Care is viewed as a sector-specific collaborative initiative, whereas sustainability broadly encompasses issues of competitive positioning and business growth, which involve full engagement of internal and external stakeholders. Even as Responsible Care expands focus to include more sustainability parameters, it is not (seen as) sufficient to drive an overall sustainability program, performance, and the business value derived from sustainable development (Savitz, Chapter 8, Section 8.2).
