When talking abont this mutual performance culture in my talk with Mr. Kuehn, I asked him to describe the performance culture in one word. His choice is informative and gives you a good feel for the passion at UPS. He stated, RELENTLESS. ... 

These three aspects of the UPS culture a mutually accountable performance culture, an emphasis on constructive dissatisfaction, and employee-centric policies and ownership, are the foundation of UPS s way of doing business.

Whether the infection is community-acquired or hospital-acquired, and whether the patient has been exposed to previous antimicrobial therapy should also be taken into account when choosing empiric therapy.

A shared performance culture. Merging companies should also look upon the integration process as a unique opportunity for reorientation, for example, completely reorganizing their areas of business or introducing new incentive systems. They should also look to develop a new and inspiring vision and a strategy for growth. 

Thus, for companies with strongly contrasting corporate cultures, a new and shared performance culture has to be actively created (Fig. 15.4). Performance cultures can be measured in two dimensions. The first of these assesses the quality of direction . If it is high, there is considerable consistency in the objectives of the group s individuals, and the objectives are challenging. Indicators are usually a common vision, a well-defined strategy, and aspirational targets. 

A two-step process has proved a valuable tool to address the individual perspective in building a shared performance culture. Fig. 15.8 shows an example of a division of a chemical company for which a common vision was to be developed. 

Clearly, the process described is not sufficient to create a shared performance culture, a process which takes years of joint effort. However, it is the critical first step in defining shared directions and shared modes of interaction as the platform for future growth at the level of each individual employee.

As rotifers are able to hlter bacteria, the microbial community of the rotifers is defined by the microbial community present in the culture water. Selected bacteria can be added to the culture water in order to shift their microbial community towards one that results in a better performing culture (Gatesoupe et al, 1989 Rombaut et al, 1999) or to one that is beneficial for the predator (Gatesoupe, 1991).
