Note 1 This term was used originally because of its analogy with a natural resin (rosin) and designated, in a broad sense, any polymer that is a basic material for plastics, organic coatings, or lacquers. However, the term is now used in a more narrow sense to refer to prepolymers of thermosets (thermosetting polymers). [Pg.244]

Khrushchev (1957) considers that the need to measure the force T has not been sufficiently well substantiated, nor has a sufficiently precise and easy in service hardness tester been developed yet for determinations of this type. However, he appreciates the usefulness of scratch hardness tests, especially at low loads, as a non-destructive technique. He recommends these methods as very useful for hardness determination of metallic layers or of materials exposed to abrasive wear under operating conditions (plastics, organic coatings, such as varnishes and paints, etc.). Scratch methods are especially important in tests of anisotropic materials where a change in scratch width is the measure of anisotropy. In static indentation methods, the indentations obtained in anisotropic materials are misformed, varying... [Pg.34]

BUTYRATE PLASTICS. See Cellulose Ester Plastics (Organic). [Pg.264]

Cellulose dissolves in Schweitzer s reagent, an ammoniacal solution of cupric oxide. After treatment with an alkali, ibe addition of carbon disulfide causes formation of sodium xanihate. a process used in the production of rayon. Sec also Fibers. The action of acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric acid produces cellulose acetates, the basis for a line of synthetic materials. See also Cellulose Ester Plastics (Organic). Nitrocelluloses are produced hy ihc action of nitric acid and sulfuric acid on cellulose, yielding compounds that are highly flammable and explosive. See also Explosives. [Pg.310]

CELLULOSE ESTER PLASTICS (Organic). The cellulosics are unique among the plastics in that the basic materials used in theiv manufacture are not synthetic polymers. Rather, they are derivatives of a natural polymer, cellulose. Sec also Cellulose. The preparation of an organic cellulose ester plastic involves the formation of a suitable cellulose derivative, fallowed by processing steps that convert the cellulose derivative into a plastic. [Pg.310]

The derivatives arc hydroxycthyl and hydroxypropyl cellulose. All four derivatives find numerous applications, and there are other reactants that can be added to cellulose, including the mixed addition of reactants leading to adducts of commercial significance. Using the optimized run protocol, different amount of samples were run to establish the reproducibility. Samples with low proportions of combustible material such as concrete, brick, metal, asbestos etc. show a good H-3 reproducibility for sample masses up to 10 g. However, for samples having high organic contents, such as biota, plastic, organic-rich sediment/soil etc.,... [Pg.104]

Compression is the most usual comminution force for brittle materials. Materials are compressed between two heavy-duty metal surfaces. Crushers based on compaction force are jaw, cone, gyratory, and roll crushers. These are most widely used to reduce the size of coarse rocks and minerals particles. In soUd waste treatment, their use is not widespread, because compression force, in most cases, simply deforms the materials but does not change their size (e.g., metals, paper, plastic, organics). [Pg.312]

Sorbents are used for final cleanup of a spill or in very small spills. They can be synthetic materials such as plastic, organic materials such as peat moss, or inorganic materials such as clay. Sorbents come in many different forms, from loose materials to pads or even booms. [Pg.110]

Plasticizer Organic compounds with low molecular weight physically integrated in the polymer structure, that is, not by a chemical reaction, thus contributing to higher deformability and/or plastification of the polymer. Under adequate conditions (higher temperatures) they can diffuse out of the polymer structure (plasticizer migration). [Pg.159]

Equations that relate T to the presence of plasticizers, organic liquids, and monomerf in polymers have been proposed by a number of Investigators. Among the first was the equation proposed by Fox and Flory In 1954 (19) ... [Pg.525]
