Recognizing that insufficient attention was being given to polymer topics in the chemistry curriculum, the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry (POLY) formed the Polymer Education Committee in 1972. Shortly thereafter they were joined in this effort by the ACS Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics (now known as the Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering or PMSE), and the committee was called JPEC, the Joint Polymer Education Committee. Over the years, the Polymer Education Committee was very active and instituted a variety of programs...

Several classes of polymers including epoxies have been developed from 2-phenyl-l,l,l,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol and its derivatives.1 Fluorinated epoxy resins are the key intermediates for the new types ofpractical organic coatings and plastics, which have fluorocarbon properties and convenient characteristics such as hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, light stability, low friction, and, in some cases, possibly high thermal stability. 

The other ACS divisions that served as joint sponsors with the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry and the chairmen provided for three of the four sessions of this symposium should be identified for their helpful assistance Howard M. Peters from the Division of Chemical Information (Chemistry and the Law Subdivision) Kenneth W. Greenlee from the Division of Small Chemical Businesses and Lawrence Keller from the Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry. Lawrence Keller served also as co-chairman and helped develop the general scope of the symposium. The Board Committee on Corporation Associates also was a joint sponsor. 

Of note was (and continues to be) the efforts of the Joint Education Committees of the Divisions of Polymer Chemistry (chaired by Eli Pearce presently chaired by Guy Donaruma) and Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry (chaired by Charles Carraher). Most of the accomplishments noted following could not have been accomplished without the joint cooperation of these two committees which acted as one "super" committee. 

Under the leadership of Eli Pearce and Shalaby Shalaby, and the sponsorship of the Divisions of Polymer Chemistry and Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry, an entire issue of CHEMISTRY was devoted to polymer chemistry (Vol. 51, No. 5, June of 1978).
