Piled foundations

Anode supports, cable insulators and the coating on the object to be protected can be destroyed by anodic evolution of chlorine (see Section 7.1), Only chorine-resistant materials should be used. Anodes on retaining walls or between pile foundations can be installed in perforated or fabricated plastic tubes (half-shells) (see Fig. 16-8). They must naturally be provided with very many holes to avoid uneven removal of anode material. Filter tubes of a chlorine-resistant special material or... 

When piled foundations are used, by regrouping equipment can often save a number of piles, more than paying for increased piping cost. 

After the failure of the Texas Tower TT-4, an important step forward was taken in the 1960s when oil drilling and related installations of pipelines at depths up to 60 m off the Mississippi Delta were begun. These installations were designed based on a more fundamental understanding of sediment properties. Oil platforms off the Mississippi Delta are of the jacket or template type which are supported by a long open-ended steel pipe pile foundation. 

Borings conducted from fixed, specially erected platforms land exploration equipment and techniques used by the petroleum industry to design pile foundations in water depths in the range of 6-15 m... 

Piles are used to transmit structural loadings to the subsoil when the surface sediments cannot support the load. They may be single or in groups, and may be fully or partially embedded. Recent advancement in installation equipment has allowed diese members to be driven in any desired environment and up to 460 m of water depth. The versatility of pile foundations has made them adaptable to most types of conditions and requirements. A detailed discussion of classical methods employed on land has been presented by Kezdi (1975). Methods employed offshore have been discussed by McClelland et al. (1967,1969), McClelland (1974), McQelland and Cox (1976), Randolph (1983), and Randolph and ( urvenec (2011). Methods and techniques applicable to the marine environment will be discussed in the following sections.

For pile foundations such as bored piles, design parameters studies such as conducted by Tan et al. (1998) is available. Design curve relating shaft resistance factor with SPT N value is reproduced in Figure 3.11. Pile base resistance from their studies is negligible and is recommended not be considered.
