The Waterloo Barrier does not remediate wastes. The contaminant plume must be small enough for enclosure to be practical. The vibration and noise associated with pile driving equipment may be a problem in densely populated areas. Funnel-and-gate system can be problematic because they alter groundwater flow. In bouldered terrain and very dense unconsolidated sediments, the use of sheet piling may not be possible. Steel sheet pile applications are generally restricted to depths of less than 30 m. At some sites it is necessary to seal the barrier system to bedrock. 

The ability of the available pile-driving equipment (hammers and chasers) to install the piles to the required penetration must be assessed. To understand the characteristics of offshore pile driving, consider the measurements in Figure 10.27. The pile systems... 

At pile cap the manipulator design has evolved in a novel manner compared to previous links manipulators. It was established that the drive systems necessary for a 4.0m in-reactor extension could all be contained in a vertical mast arrangement above the standpipe and that there was sufficient crane headroom available to allow the mast to be lifted on and off the reactor and the STTF. 

Containment at pile cap is maintained using a rigid glovebox and extending flexible bellows sections to surround the mast drive systems. A reeling hose is provided to allow the cooling gas and electrical services to be run to the TRIUMPH camera.
