Technology transfer specialists, in contrast, are more focused on business aspects. They need to be able to work closely with and understand the work of the industrial property people, to help them check on the patent applications filed by the institution. But they also, and more importantly, must follow market trends involving the portfolio of patents and applications, orient the preparation of technical cooperation, detect and contact potential partners for future technology transfers, negotiate and draft contractual instruments applicable to each case, monitor the partnerships formed, deal with external law offices specializing in intellectual property, and act in cases of breach of contractual clauses. In relation to this last item, when a contractual infraction or other compliance problem is noted, a choice must be made as to what action to take. Will it be by judicial action or some form of alternative dispute resolution ... 

Essential to a partnership in medical decision making is the necessity that each patient realigns his or her own approach toward health and the healthcare system. Currently, our Western culture advertises and promotes poor choices in lifestyle that ultimately result in burgeoning healthcare expenditures. Fundamental to this new paradigm of healthcare is the requirement that individuals take responsibility for their own wellness, making healthy choices concerning nutrition, physical activity, and response to stressful situations. 

Dozens of public outreach events featuring vehicle, fuel, and fuel cell displays were conducted to increase awareness. Highlights included participation in the Michelin Bibendum Challenge by six of the CaFCP s automotive companies and the Ballard ZEbus. This alternative fuel vehicle event included a road rally drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The Partnership also developed a unique, portable exhibit that simulates refueling with hydrogen and presents fuel choice issues in DVD format. 

An unanswered question is what is the best role for humans in safety-critical process control. There are three choices beyond direct control the human can monitor an automated control system, the human can act as a backup to the automation, or the human and automation can both participate in the control through some type of partnership. These choices are discussed in depth in Safeware and are only summarized here. 

Choices Lessons from the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership.133... 

Synthetic hiomaterials, whether they are metallic, ceramic or polymeric, shall be thoroughly tested for their in vivo hiocompadbility. In vivo animal tests apparently place a burden on the shoulders of many materials-hased research groups since such animal tests require tedious histological examinations and careful interpretation. In vitro osteoblast cell culture tests, mainly reporting the live/dead cell numbers and the popular ALP (alkaline phosphatase) activity data, have thus been the most routine tests performed by the materials-based research groups which lack collaborative partnerships with the external veterinarians and skilled histologists. DMEM (or a-MEM) solutions are the media of choice in such in vitro cell culture tests. 

Partnership classification A classification of partnerships has three dimensions purpose, direction, and choice. The purpose defines whether or not the partnership creates new space. Direction refers to the supply chain. Horizontal means partners are at the same echelon. Vertical is a partnership along the supply chain — probably between customer and supplier. Choice refers to the relative strength of each partner. A many-to-one means your company has many competitors and is seeking a partnership with a dominant partner. 

Choices of procurement policies. Some alternatives include volume consolidation, alliances and partnerships with suppliers, just-in-time (JIT), and manufacturing resource planning (MRP). From a technical perspective, various types of e-procurement can be chosen (for instance, EDI, Internet-based business-to-business (B2B) approaches, and trading networks)... 

Figure 16.1 shows the choices for defining the purpose of the partnership. The shaded square (IV) represents the existing situation — the as-is with respect to partnering and the roles of each link in the supply chain. The figure reflects two levels of decision. The first-level decision is whether to create new space in the supply chain. Moves from IV to I or II positions on the grid represent this decision. At the second decision level, a company can do this on its own (II) or it can choose to partner (I). 

Just as he had done with his initial efforts in so many aspects of e-commerce, he looked for a way to provide his customers a good product at a good price.
