In this paper, epoxy composites were developed by using a synergistic combination of different type of conductive fillers. Both high in-plane and through-plane electrical conductivities were achieved. In addition, the plates showed good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Pentaerythritol in rosin ester form is used in hot-melt adhesive formulations, especially ethylene—vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, as a tackifier. Polyethers of pentaerythritol or trim ethyl ol eth an e are also used in EVA and polyurethane adhesives, which exhibit excellent bond strength and water resistance. The adhesives maybe available as EVA melts or dispersions (90,91) or as thixotropic, one-package, curable polyurethanes (92). Operating conditions are important determinants of the choice of filter media and sealant used in the cartridges. Some filter media, such as cellulose paper filters, are useful only at relatively low temperatures of 95 to 150"C (200 to 300°F). For high-temperature flue gas streams, more thermally stable filter media, such as nonwoven polyester, polypropylene, or Nomex, must be used. A reaction vessel explosion at BASF s resins plant in Cincinnati (July 19, 1990) killed one and injured 71. The BASF facility manufactures acrylic, alkyd, epoxy, and phenol-formaldehyde resins used as can and paper-cup liner coatings. The explosion occurred when a flammable solvent used to clean a reaction vessel vented into the plant and ignited. Virtually all epoxy resins are made with starting materials based on epichlorohydrin, principally by reaction with bisphenol A. It is also used for the preparation of resins to increase the wet strength of paper. Both epichlorohydrin and glycidol are used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. [Pg.132]
