These are the most important components of paint. Coatings can be either clear or opaque (containing pigments) and either solvent- or water-based. Isophorone is a solvent for a large number of natural and synthetic polymers, resins, waxes, fats, and oils. Specifically, it is used as a solvent for concentrated vinyl chloride/acetate-based coating systems for metal cans, other metal paints, nitrocellulose finishes, printing inks for plastics, some herbicide and pesticide formulations, and adhesives for plastics, poly(vinyl) chloride and polystyrene materials (Papa and Sherman 1981). Isophorone also is an intermediate in the synthesis of 3, 5-xylenol, 3, 3, 5-trimethylcyclohexanol (Papa and Sherman 1981), and plant growth retardants (Haruta et al. 1974). Of the total production, 45-65% is used in vinyl coatings and inks, 15-25% in agricultural formulations, 15-30% in miscellaneous uses and exports, and 10% as a chemical intermediate (CMA 1981). [Pg.69]

Bismuth vanadate pigments are used in the manufacture of lead-free, weather resistant, brilliant yellow colors for automobile finishes and industrial paints. Although the term paint has been used for latex-based systems as well as many others, traditionally it refers to one of the oldest coating systems known—that of a pigment combined with a drying oil, usually a solvent. Drying oils (e.g., linseed, tung), by virtue of their multiple unsaturation, behave like polyfunctional monomers which can polymerize ( dry ) to produce film by a combination of oxidation and free-radical propagation. Field trials have shown that the expected durability of the new waterborne coating systems is equal to that of conventional solventborne paints. As a further advantage, the number of single coats can be reduced from three to two.
