Combination pigments

Acceptance of a color recommendation made by the coatings suppHer effectively eliminates the time and cost involved in an initial color match and ensures selection of a pigment combination appropriate to the coating use. If, however, a coatings user provides a sample or standard for a color match, formulators need the foUowing information. 

Certain metal salts effectively reduce the photoactivity of titanium dioxide pigments. Combination of these salts with an appropriate antioxidant and/or ultraviolet stabilizer provided highly efficient stabilization of polypropylene. The deactivation/ stabilization performance of the metal salts is adequately explained on the basis of their decomposition of hydrogen peroxide at the pigment surface and by annihilation of positive holes in the pigment crystal lattice. 

Dye Combinations. In certain cases it is desirable to print fiber blends with combinations of the appropriate dye classes, rather than with pigments. Only polyester-cellulose blends are of commercial importance and the following dye systems have been developed for them. The dyes of the different classes are contained in the same print paste and, therefore, are applied simultaneously in one print operation. They include disperse-reactive combinations, disperse-pigment combinations, and disperse-vat combinations. 

It can be seen that, historically, a paint is anything that contains pigment, a colored, powdered substance, and a binder, a material that evenly disperses the pigment and adheres to a surface when the paint is applied and then dries. A pigment combined with a binder makes a paint. A medium is used to dilute a paint. The composition of watercolor, egg tempera, oil, and acrylic paints is discussed in this chapter.

Pigment volume concentration has a definite etrect on fire-retardant properties of paint films. This effect appears to be specific for each pigment or pigment combination. 

These pigments combine excellent tinctorial properties with outstanding durability, solvent fastness, lightfastness, heat fastness, and chemical resistance. Table 8.1 lists those shades currently available commercially.

Although the term paint has been used for latex-based systems as well as many others, traditionally it refers to one of the oldest coating systems known—that of a pigment combined with a drying oil, usually a solvent. Drying oils (e.g., linseed, tung), by virtue of their multiple unsaturation, behave like polyfunctional monomers which can polymerize ( dry ) to produce film by a combination of oxidation and free-radical propagation. Oil-soluble metallic soaps are used to catalyze the oxidation process. 

The nucleating activity of the pigment, combined to the mixing process, has a major influence on the microstructure and properties of the final products.
