Now that 80% or more of children survive their primary cancers, the incidence of secondary neoplasms may increase. Recognizing this potential, many treatment regimens for children are being modified appropriately to reduce exposure to alkylators, topoisomerase inhibitors, and radiation. Late effects clinics screen for secondary malignancies and other disease and treatment-related disabilities that accompany childhood cancer. Similar screening and educational opportunities are not currently established in adult survivors. 

The completion of this volume marks the happy milestone for me of a 15-year editorial association with Academic Press. It is appropriate, therefore, to acknowledge the professionalism of the staff and management, as well as their manifold contributions to the success of these volumes. It also marks my embarkation on new and more challenging professional pursuits. These ultimately will allow more opportunity to continue to perform the editorial tasks associated with Advances in Clinical Chemistry, as well as other educational and scientific activities. 

Implications for Practice. Time-to-degree in STEM fields must be shortened. The U.S. can make STEM career prospects more attractive to its citizens by increasing the number and size of stipends available from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies. Since these awards are limited to U.S. citizens, they represent a strategic tool for differentiating U.S. citizens from non-citizens (Freeman, 2004). If the gap is to be eliminated, the disparities in educational opportunities associated with social class and race, will have to be eliminated beginning at preschool. This is critical to increase the representation of African American STEM careers.

Besides, the mall is not without its educational opportunities. There are bookstores, where there is at least a short shelf of classics at great prices, and other books from which it is possible to learn more than how to do sit-ups. There are tools, from hammers to VCRs, and products, from clothes to records, that can help the young find and express themselves. There are older people with stories, and places to be alone or to talk one-on-one with a kindred spirit. And there is always the passing show.

Educational opportunities abound within pharmaceutical companies. An employee can complete a coherent, formal education, take courses without academic credit, or learn chemistry informally fi"om a variety of other sources. 

In other words, the agency expects to see evidence that the research and education components blend together well. The proposal should articulate how the personnel will collaborate, and how the project will benefit from the synergy. For example, there are successful MRSEC centers that provide educational opportunities for students from underserved populations in their geographical locale, that have special summer programs for high school teachers, or that involve curriculum development directly related to the scientific research (5). All these situations provide excellent possibilities for the teaming of researchers and educators. 

At the symposium, we received a grant from the American Chemical Society (ACS-PRF Special Education Opportunities Grant) and donations from the following companies Allied Chemical Co., Dow Chemical Co., Ethyl Corp., General Electric Co., Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co., Phillips Petroleum Co., and Tennessee Eastman Co. Equality between men and women, on the other hand, was a principle enshrined in the constitutions of both the ERG and the GDR. Although steps were taken in the East and the West to improve girls educational opportunities, in the GDR there was arguably a more serious and partially successful attempt to restructure traditional gender roles. Medical Programs. Large chemical plants have at least one hill-time physician who is at the plant five days a week and on call at all other times. Smaller plants either have part-time physicians or take injured employees to a nearby hospital or clinic by arrangement with the company compensation-insurance carrier. When part-time physicians or outside medical services are used, there is Httle opportunity for medical personnel to become familiar with plant operations or to assist in improving the health aspects of plant work. Therefore, it is essential that chemical-ha2ards manuals and procedures, which highlight symptoms and methods of treatment, be developed. A hill-time industrial physician should devote a substantial amount of time to becoming familiar with the plant, its processes, and the materials employed. Such education enables the physician to be better prepared to treat injuries and illnesses and to advise on preventive measures.
