Other Books and Articles

It remains only for me to acknowledge some of. my many debts in this area, beginning literally with thanks to the National Science Foundation for support during some of my work. There is of course no claim that the book contains anything substantially new, and most of the material can be found in the work by Demazure and Gabriel. My presentation has also been influenced by other books and articles, and (in Chapter 17) by mimeographed notes of M. Artin. But I personally learned much of this subject from lectures by P. Russell, M. Sweedler, and J. Tate I have consciously adopted some of their ideas, add doubtless have reproduced many others. 

This is not a finite listing, as other, more complex approaches such as Managanent Oversight and Risk Tree Analysis (MORT), failure mode and effect analysis, and the aspects of system safety engineering are not covered within the scope of this book. These approaches can be found in many other books and articles. 

PHILLIP MANNING is the author of four other books and 150 or so magazine and newspaper articles. His most recent book. Islands of Hope, won the 1999 National Outdoor Book Award for nature and the environment. Manning has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. But Sasha was by no means mad he was just a free spirit, not particularly concerned with appearances as long as he could synthesize and study his family of intriguing psychochemicals. He and his wife proved to be most generous friends. Sasha has lent or given me several useful books and articles in the past few years on subjects relating to LSD and other psychedelic drugs. He recently provided me with a great deal of difficult-to-find information that has helped in the preparation of this book. 

Basically, as you read through the books and articles you have chosen, you should be looking for ideas, facts, statistics, statements, speeches, or other information—whether it be a sentence or a complete paragraph—that you feel will be important support material when you assemble your notes into a research paper. 

An earlier review treated the organometallic derivatives, including alkyl, aryl, vinyl, alkynyl, carbonyl, carbene, alkene and alkyne complexes,16 and these will not be treated here (see Table 1 for other books and reviews on organogold chemistry). Two important articles dealing with [AuCl(CO)], including its structure and catalytic properties, have been published recently.97,381... 

Some pharmacy schools provide regular workshops for students or parts of courses devoted to time management, study skills, stress management, and other pharmacy school and life survival skills. If your school is not one of those, however, this chapter is here to help get you on your way to being a better time manager. Additionally, there are books and articles referred to throughout this chapter that can serve to help you become a successful time manager. 

The many examples, the eye-pleasing presentation and the references to other texts and articles make the book useful as a teaching tool. Beginners and those more familiar with the field will find the book a great benefit because of that breadth, and especially because of the clarity and relative uniformity of presentation. This area of speculation is controversial. Victor J. Stenger, Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Hawaii, has published numerous books and articles that suggest that the conditions for the appearance of a universe with life (and heavy element nucleosynthesis) are not quite as improbable as other physicists have suggested. Determination of appropriate coefficients of heat transfer is required for design calculations on heat-transfer operations. These coefficients can sometimes be estimated on the basis of past experience, or they can be calculated from empirical or theoretical equations developed by other workers in the field. Many semiempirical equations for the evaluation of heat-transfer coefficients have been published. Each of these equations has its limitations, and the engineer must recognize the fact that these limitations exist. A summary of useful and reliable design equations for estimating heat-transfer coefficients under various conditions is presented in this chapter. Additional relations and discussion of special types of heat-transfer equipment and calculation methods are presented in the numerous books and articles that have been published on the general subject of heat transfer. 

General Theory. In addition to the work already quoted, a few papers considering various aspects of the general theory of polarizabilities are also included. We mention the efforts to consider the effects of the polarizability of relatively crude models (such as metallic spheres) [101, 103]. The tensor representations of molecular polarizabilities have been carefully discussed [84, 141, 362]. More general procedures applicable to a variety of systems (including big molecules and molecular complexes) that are often based on classical electrostatics have been proposed [4, 21, 118, 119, 127, 135, 136]. Various books and articles are concerned with the definition of the terms in common use [12, 13, 20, 91, 109]. Other articles deal with relevant general properties of matter [22, 113] and molecules in electric and magnetic fields [31,239], triplet polarizabilities [10,61, 102,126,208], and the calculations of polarizabilities of molecules in the liquid. 

The AATCC system is a very detailed dye class identification system. The brief description of some basic tests in this chapter is only for the purpose of introduction. Readers are recommended to obtain thebook Analytical Methods for a Textile Laboratory by the AATCC in order to comprehend the complexity of the dye analysis. Of course the other books and journal articles listed in the references are also excellent information sources. Whenever possible, reading these materials would definitely help develop a better understanding of colour chemistry, which will ultimately ensure that the dye analysis is performed more effectively and efficiently. 

Others continue to warm to the subject in a growing array of books and articles, with the Internet furnishing still more information. Along the way, there was Death by Injection The Story of the Medical Conspiracy Against America by Clarence Eustace Mullins, considered sort of an underground expose, not to mention Robert S. Mendelsohn s controversial Confessions of a Medical Heretic. There is also Paul Starr s Pulitzer-winning Social Transformation of American Medicine, published in 1982. 

One of the bits that I really need to understand more fully is what people really mean by methodology. This word is always coming up and I never really know exactly what it means. It s obviously really important now that we are being asked to do our own bit of research. There are some books and articles on our reading list which I think might help with this. The other thing I think I ll do is talk to other people on this course about what they think it means. I feel reaUy stupid asking the tutor. 

Although this chapter is primarily designed to help with the books and articles that you will need to read as part of your studies, in order to write more effectively there is another important way of thinking about reading that we want you to consider. As an effective writer, you are also a reader not only of other authors work but also of your own. Any of the techniques that you learn in order to approach published, written texts can also be used to edit and work on your own writing. This will enable you to make sure that what you write will make sense to the person who is reading it, your tutor. We will return to this in Chapter 8. 

In addition to two new chapters. Environmental Aspects of Coal Use and Coal and Energy Security, much of the material in this edition has been rewritten to incorporate the latest developments in the coal industry. Citations from review articles, patents, other books, and technical articles with substantial introductory material are incorporated into the... 

As in the second edition, this edition has references cited thronghont the book so that the reader might use them for more detail. However, it should be noted that only selected references could be employed, lest the reference lists ontweigh the actnal book. It wonld have been impossible to include all of the relevant references. Thus, where possible, references snch as review articles, other books, and those technical articles with snbstantial introdnctory material have been nsed in order to pass on the most information to the reader.
