The changes to the London Protocol also led to a revision of the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, which is the North-East Atlantic s version of the London Protocol, and which combines the 1972 Oslo Convention on dumping waste at sea and the 1974 Paris Convention on land-based sources of marine pollution. In 2007, the OSPAR Convention also adopted amendments to the Annexes to the Convention to allow the storage of C02 in geological formations under the seabed (www.ospar.org). 

Another piece of legislative action to be considered is the OSPAR strategy regarding hazardous substances, known as the Convention for the protection of the marine environment of North-Atlantic . Among the OSPAR list of chemicals of priority action, surfactants NPEOs and so-called related substances, such as NP, are included among other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like PCBs, PAHs and Hg, indicating that these compounds show a risk to the marine environment.

Synthetic musks are important ingredients for the fragrance industry. They are heavily used in laundry detergents, fabric softeners, cleaning products, air fresheners, and so on, and in cosmetic and personal hygiene products such as hand soap, shampoo, and perfume. Nitro, polycyclic, macrocyclic, and the newest dass, alicydic musks constitute the four major classes. The OSPAR (Oslo-Paris) Commission summarized information on their environmental behavior that was relevant to its charge, namely protection of the northeast Atlantic marine environment [37]. Ospar Convention - the objective of this convention is the protection of the marine environment of the north-east Atlantic. Spain is one of the 16 contracting parties to the Ospar Convention.

The OSPAR Convention for the Protection of Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic is the current legal instrument guiding international cooperation on the protection of the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic. Work under the Convention is managed by the OSPAR Commission, made up of representatives of the Governments of 15 Contracting Parties and the European Commission, representing the European Community [30].

At the international level, regulations concerning dredged material and contaminated sediments are part of the Oslo and Paris (OSPAR), the Helsinki and the London Convention. The OSPAR Commission is of importance in setting guidelines for the disposal of dredged material in the marine environment, which are reflected in national criteria for disposal. It is expected that OSPAR will continue in this role. The feed-back system from contaminated sediments to the reduction of emission needs to be improved.
