London Protocol

The changes to the London Protocol also led to a revision of the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, which is the North-East Atlantic s version of the London Protocol, and which combines the 1972 Oslo Convention on dumping waste at sea and the 1974 Paris Convention on land-based sources of marine pollution. In 2007, the OSPAR Convention also adopted amendments to the Annexes to the Convention to allow the storage of C02 in geological formations under the seabed (www.ospar.org). 

A modernised version of the international 1972 London Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter (London Convention, 1972 London Protocol, 1996). 

In the 1970s the United Nations enacted controls to reduce litter by adopting two treaties (1) the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, aka the London Convention, and (2) the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, aka MARPOL. The London Convention has been updated by the London Protocol, which came into force in 2006. MARPOL was updated in 1978 with new provisions coming into force in 2006.

The decrease is continuing due to global adherence to the provisions of the Montreal (1989) and London (1990) Protocols, and it is hoped that the most deleterious CFCs will eventually be phased out completely. As a result of their work, Rowland and Molina were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for 1995 (together with P. Crutzen, who showed how NO and NO2 could similarly act as catalysts for the depletion of stratospheric ozone). What does seem to be clear is that without the international agreements reached in Montreal, London, and Copenhagen, the problem of ozone depletion would probably have been much worse than it is today. The graph on page 79 shows the trends in ozone depletion (as measured by the concentration of chlorine in the stratosphere) that would have been seen in the absence of no agreement at all, with the Montreal Protocol alone, and with later amendments to that agreement.

International allention lo CFCs resulted in a meeting of diplomats from around the world lit Monlreal in 1987. They forged a trealy that called for drastic reductions in the production of CFCs. In 1990, diplomats met in London and voted to strengthen the Montreal Protocol significantly by calling for a complete elimination of CFCs by die year 2000.

According to the London Agreement, these facts of common knowledge" included anything which any office or commission from any Allied nation claimed in documents, files, reports and protocols. Thus, all evidence produced in the trials discussed in 3.3.1.1 to 3.3.1.4 was deemed to be a matter of fact needing no further substantiation. The IMT categorized the SS and the Waffen-SS, for example, as criminal organizations primarily on the basis of the evidence produced in the Dachau Trials.91... 

The 1996 Protocol to the London Dmnping Convention contain in its Article 8 the same exception as in the Convention [7].
