Operating procedures, SEMS

Typically, colloidal suspensions are deposited on polycarbonate filters immediately following sampling to reduce post-collection precipitation or aggregation artifacts and mimic the operational procedures used to define dissolved and particulate sample components. Obviously, a well-dispersed dilute sample should be used to avoid artifactual particle overlap. Filter sections are then mounted on SEM stubs and carbon or metal coated (Au/Pd) for compositional analysis and micrographic imaging, respectively. The tedious nature of operator controlled analysis of particulate samples in the SEM and the TEM has often precluded the acquisition of statistically valid information regarding suspension composition. 

It is the intent of this mle to hold the operator accountable for the overall safety of the offshore facility, including ensuring that all contractors and subcontractors have safety policies and procedures in place that support the implementation of the operator s SEMS program and align with the principles of managing safety set forth in API RP 75.

In supporting its proposed SEMS rule, MMS also discussed data on 1,443 Incidents that occurred over the same years, which involved 41 fatalities, 502 injuries, 10 losses of well control, 11 collisions, 476 fires, 356 pollution events , and 224 crane and hoist mishaps. It concluded that the majority of these incidents were related to operational and maintenance procedures or human error, and that operating procedures and mechanical integrity accounted for the greatest number of spills. 

If a management of change results in a change in the operating procedures of your SEMS program, such changes must be documented and dated. 

The SEMS discusses the use of standardized operating procedures. Such procedures apply, with only minor variations, to facilities that differ only in size or the number of equipment items present. Highly efficient ZnO NP-catalyzed one-pot solvent-finee synthesis of novel pyridine derivatives by three-component reaction of p-enaminones, different active methylene compounds, and ammonium acetate via Michael addition, cyclodehydia-tion, and elimination sequence is reported [79] (Scheme 5.29). SEMS is a different kettle of fish. Inspectors will be asked to evaluate systems such as management of change or operating procedures that are hard to define prescriptively. In the case of operating procedures, for example, an inspector using the prescriptive approach can determine if the procedures exist. But he or she will need considerable industry experience before being able to determine if those procedures are too long or too short.

This book should be read in conjtmction with Process Risk and Reliability Management, published by Elsevier in 2010. That book provides much more detail regarding the implementation and management of the elements of SEMS such as operating procedures and mechanical integrity. 

Catalyst films for electrochemical promotion studies should be thin and porous enough so that the catalytic reaction under study is not subject to internal mass-transfer limitations within the desired operating temperature. Thickness below 10 pm and porosity larger than 30% are usually sufficient to ensure the absence of internal mass-transfer limitations. Several SEM images of such catalyst films have been presented in this book. SEM characterization is very important in assessing the morphological suitability of catalyst films for electrochemical promotion studies and in optimizing the calcination procedure. 

In an auto theft case, the vehicle information number tab (VIN) had been removed and a second one welded on to replace it. The VIN tab was examined in the SEM and the weld, the remaining fracture surfaces, the grinding marks and the swarf remnant from the grinding were easily identified and photographed. These features are shown in Figure 1. Metallographic procedures were also used after the SEM analysis to confirm the fact that a welding operation had been performed. 

SEM, SIMS, XPS and AES measurements are performed in HV or UHV systems. Hence, the study of sensitive electrodes requires special procedures for the transfer of the samples from the glove box atmosphere in which they are prepared to the vacuum system.
