Operability test

The notion of an atomic operation is important for synchronization. An atomic operation is one that is indivisible. Once initiated, it will continue to completion. There are usually a large number of synchronization primitives in a parallel computer, most commonly test and set primitives, or semaphores implemented in hardware (10). A test and set operation tests the current value of a variable and optionally sets a new value, all in one indivisible operation. [Pg.94]

At shift change the operator verbally told the relief operator what process steps remained. The relief operator tested for, and detected unreacted monomer in the copolmerization process. In an attempt to complete the reaction, the relief operator added additional initiator to the reactor a runaway reaction promptly occurred. [Pg.130]

The operational test of the lube system is, as the name implies, a functional test to check as many of the features as practical under running conditions. The first and last step is a demonstration of the cleanliness of the system. This is followed by a running test of a four-hour duration. The test should simulate the field operation with the compressor in every way practical. All equipment to be furnished with the lube system should be used in the test, including the standby pump start and trip switches. All other instruments should be used to demonstrate their operation. Prior to starting the four-hour run, the system should be thoroughly inspected for leaks and the leaks corrected. If no steam is available for a steam turbine (if one is used), the four-hour run can be made on the electric pump. However, every effort should be made to use an alternate source of energy such as compressed air, to operate the steam turbine. [Pg.415]

In many ways factories, at least, ARE like they used to be. This is not surprising, as human nature is a common factor. We have better equipment but may be just as likely as in the past to cut corners when we design, construct, operate, test, and maintain it, perhaps more likely as there are fewer of us to keep our eyes open as we go round the plant and to follow up unusual observations. We have access to more knowledge than our parents and grandparents, but are we any more thorough and reliable ... [Pg.396]

The review of the data portion of the Indian Point 2 (IP2) and 3 (IPS) PRA (a 1982 internal document prepared by Consolidated Edison and the New York Power Authority) is confined to the plant-specific and generic component failure and service hour data sections because these were the only segments available to the reviewers. The LERs produced during a ten-year span of IP2 s operation were evaluated to determine their applicability to the PRA data needs. It was eventually decided to use only the LERs generated after IP2 became critical (from May 23, 1973 to December 31, 1979) for the component data base development, based on the availability of failure event information and more uniform operability, testing, and reporting criteria. [Pg.119]

The aja, operator tests whether orbital i exists in the wave function, if that is the case, a one-electron orbital matrix element is generated, and similarly for the two-electron terms. Using the Hamiltonian in eq. (C.6) with the wave function in eq. (C.4) generates the first quantized operator in eq. (C.3). [Pg.412]

Any (project yield improvements should be based on conducting a senes of operating test runs. The test runs should reflect typicar operating modes. The results should be material/heat balanced. Another test run should be performed just prior to the revamp. A comparison of the results, pre- and post-revamp, should reflect no major changes in the catalyst reformulation. [Pg.208]

Many of these tests gave evidence for changes in behavior following exposure to neurotoxic pesticides. The author concludes that significant behavioral effects were often recorded down to one order of magnitude below the LCjo in question. Some tests, such as operant tests, were relatively simple and gave reproducible results, but it was difficult to evaluate the relevance of these to survival in the wild. Other tests, such as breeding behavior and prey capture, were more complex and less reproducible, but more relevant to the natural world. [Pg.307]

The sessile drop method has several drawbacks. Several days elapse between each displacement, and total test times exceeding one month are not uncommon. It can be difficult to determine that the interface has actually advanced across the face of the crystal. Displacement frequency and distance are variable and dependent upon the operator. Tests are conducted on pure mineral surfaces, usually quartz, which does not adequately model the heterogeneous rock surfaces in reservoirs. There is a need for a simple technique that gives reproducible data and can be used to characterize various mineral surfaces. The dynamic Wilhelmy plate technique has such a potential. This paper discusses the dynamic Wilhelmy plate apparatus used to study wetting properties of liquid/liquid/solid systems important to the oil industry. [Pg.560]

A human error or reliability analysis (HRA) can be performed to identify points that may contribute to an accidental loss. Human errors may occur in all facets of a the hydrocarbon industry. They are generally related to the complexity of the equipment, human-equipment interfaces, hardware for emergency actions, and procedures for operations, testing and training. The probabilities of certain types of errors occurring are normally predicted as indicated in Table 29. Individual tasks can be analyzed to determine the probability of an error occurring. From these probabilities, consequences can be identified which detemline the risk of a particular error. [Pg.240]

All the results are summarized in Fig. 23 and serve as the first positive operational test for the McConnell theory. It is also noted that the orientational mode of stacking of spin-containing benzene rings can be useful in aligning spins parallel or antiparallel between high-spin aromatic molecules. [Pg.236]

Operational testing is the main body of an OQ. It should include those tests and corresponding instructions that will help validate that each instrument component in an HPLC system is operating properly according to the vendor s functional specifications. [Pg.314]
