Test Farm operation

A test farm has been deployed about 5 miles off the coast of California and has been in operation for about 9 months. Laboratory experiments are also underway involving kelp pretreatment, post-treatment and conversion to methane utilizing both sewage based and marine based inocula.

There is a need for far greater control of the process under farm conditions, for better information on the choice of plant, its management and for simple instrumentation or tests to indicate to users how the plant is operating. Guidelines and information on the most economic method of utilising biogas on individual farms is required. 

A 250 kilowatt system is planned for a site in Norway. The system will be operated by Norske Shell to demonstrate that CO2 can be economically recovered. The CO2 recovery technology is being developed by Shell Hydrogen. The CO2 could be sequestered in underground reservoirs or could be used for special applications such as fish farms or agricultural greenhouses. The test system will be sited at a fish hatchery. The system is expected to begin operation in early 2003. 

A third example [28] involved a Superfund site. Octolig was used in a bench test of material from the Liberty Industrial Finishing Superfund site, a 30-acre parcel in the village of Farm-ingdale, Nassau County, New York state. At this location. Planting Tests A prototype machine has been developed to plant 25 cm long tree cuttings at a rapid rate. Approximately 180,000 cuttings were planted at the rate of 1 per second in a single row. In the operational version of the planter six rows at a time will be planted. The planter can be used on unprepared Conservation Reserve Program land and difficult-to-farm land also.

A Report of Casualties caused on Weaver Farm by G-34, dated September 19, 1918, and the Bancroft description of persistency testing of gas indicate a substantial ongoing operation. The Weaver Farm was used, apparently by 18 men, as a staging...
