The rate of productions of bulk combustion products (CO, C02, soot, and smoke in general) is proportional to the HRR, as both of them are originated by the reaction rate at the total burning [Pg.48]

The heating mechanisms from an open lire are the radiation from the flames that transport energy in rays going in all directions originated at the lire, but is of relatively short range, and the heat convection of the hot smoke can travel significant distances. Heat transfer by conduction is important only very close to the flame rim on the surface of the fuel. [Pg.49]


Coconut oil [8001-31-8] is one of the primary vegetable oils used in the manufacture of soap products. Coconut oil is obtained from the dried fmit (copra) of the coconut palm tree. The fmit is dried either in the sun or over open fires from burning the husks of the fmit, with the oil pressed out of the dried fmit. [Pg.151]

The passing of the Clean Air Act in the United Kingdom in 1956 resulted in a revival of interest in low temperature carbonization to produce a very reactive coke suitable for open fires. In the CoaUte process, the coal is heated at 600—650°C for 4 h in small retorts each hoi ding 6—7 metric tons (5). The Rexco process employed large internally heated retorts in which charges of 34 metric tons were heated to 700—750°C for 6 h, but is no longer in operation in the United Kingdom (6). [Pg.336]

Fire Hazard. Although chlorosulfuric acid itself is not dammable, it may cause ignition by contact with combustible materials because of the heat of reaction. Open fires, open lights, and matches should not be used in or around tanks or containers where hydrogen gas may be collected because of the action of chlorosulfuric acid on metals. One of the reasons the tribes of early history were nomadic was to move periodically away from the stench of the animal, vegetable, and human wastes they generated. By variation of temperature and air flow rate burning conditions ranging form a smoldering fire to an open fire (e.g. conditions of a municipal waste incinerator) can be modeled. Plastics and metals are also of high interest. The plastic materials are normally mechanically shredded, manually sorted and then remelted. Then, new products are produced by heated extrusion. However Puckett [7] states that 25-30% of the plastics are burnt in open fires in order to recover valuable metals such as copper. The metals are only extracted and not further processed due to the fact that the informal recycling facilities in China do not have the proper technology to perform the metal recycling via smelting. [Pg.324]
