The key methods that are the focus of this section are categorized as analytical versus numerical methods. Analytical methods can be solved using explicit equations. In some cases, the methods can be conveniently applied using pencil and paper, although for most practical problems, such methods are more commonly coded into a spreadsheet or other software. Analytical methods can provide exact solutions for some specific situations. Unfortunately, such situations are not often encountered in practice. Numerical methods require the use of a computer simulation package. They offer the advantage of broader applicability and flexibility to deal with a wide range of input distribution types and model functional forms and can produce a wide variety of output data. [Pg.53]

One of the difficulties with optimal control theory is in identifying the underlying physical mechanism, or mechanisms, leading to control. Methods [2, 7, 9, 14, 26-29], that utilize a small number of interfering pathways reveal the mechanism by construction. Especially for the electrons, the fluid model has the advantage of a lower computational effort than the PIC/MC method. The successful numerical solution of differential equations requires attention to two issues associated with error control through time step selection. One is accuracy and the other is stability. Accuracy requires a time step that is sufficiently small so that the numerical solution is close to the true solution. Stability requires a time step that is sufficiently small that numerical errors are damped, and not amplified. Most numerical methods for calculating molecular hyperpolarizability use sum over states expressions in either a time-dependent (explicitly including field dependent dispersion terms) or time-independent perturbation theory framework [13,14].
