Resistance wire

Co, by weight, is an extremely powerful magnet that offers a B-H (max) almost twice that of Alnico V. Platinum resistance wires are used for constructing high-temperature electric furnaces. [Pg.137]

The polyetherimide—polysdoxane multiblock copolymers are relatively hard (about 70 on the Shore D scale). Their main appHcation is flame-resistant wire and cable covering (24), where they combine very low flammabiUty with a low level of toxic products in the smoke. This unusual and vital combination of properties justifies their relatively high price, about 37/kg, at a specific gravity of about 1.2. [Pg.20]

The ribbon L of the cracking element is threaded between the tungsten loops M, of which there are five each at the top and bottom and eight at the center. The unit is suspended with a copper wire from the glass cross-support as shown. The lower end is free to drop down as the resistance wire expands this prevents short-circuiting of the element. [Pg.28]

Phenolic resins are useful surface coating materials. Resols are useful for stoving lacquers for coating chemical plant, textile equipment, razor blades, brassware cuid food cans. Phenolic resins are used with poly(vinyl formal) as a flexible, tough and solvent-resistant wire enamel. Oil-soluble resins based on synthetic phenols form the basis of some gloss paints. [Pg.661]

Fay and Lewis (1977) used spherical gas samples inside soap bubbles whose volumes ranged from 20 to 190 cm. Typically, a sphere was ignited with resistance wire, and the combustion process was then filmed with a high-speed camera. The fireball s maximum height and diameter, as well as the time needed to complete combustion, were evaluated. The fireball s thermal radiation was sensed by a radiation detector. Figure 6.3 relates fireball burning time and size to initial propane... [Pg.161]

A similar unit, modified in details such as location of condenser, use of an agitator and shape of the vessel, was used by Fisher and Whitney . Further substantial modifications to permit interface location of specimens, cooling of specimens and operation under applied pressure, have been described by Fisher . Earlier laboratory test methods tried by Fisher and Whitney included exposure of specimens heated by their own electrical resistance and of tubular specimens containing a pencil-type resistance-wire heater in a quartz tube. [Pg.1002]

Probably the largest use of Ni is in the manuf of Monel metal, stainless steels, Ni-chrome resistance wire, in alloys for electronic and space applications, and as a catalyst (Raney Ni). It is also used as a fuel in pyrotechnics (Ref 2) and... [Pg.209]

The numerical method of solving the model using computer tools does not require the explicit form of the differential equation to be used except to understand the terms which need to be entered into the program. The heater and the barrel were modeled as layers of materials with varying thermal characteristics. The energy supplied was represented as a heat generation term qg) in a resistance wire material. Equation 1... [Pg.493]

A bridge of resistance wire is connected across the ends of two leading wires and surrounded by a loose charge of flashing composition or of initiating explosive. [Pg.107]

The manufacture of a sandwich fusehead proceeds in the following manner. Brass or other metal foils are fixed on each side of a sheet of pressboard with a suitable adhesive. The pressboard is then stamped into combs of the shape shown in Fig. 10.3 and steps are cut in the tips of the heads. Fine resistance wire is stretched across the heads and soldered to the foil on each side of the pressboard. These operations were originally all carried out by hand now many are carried out mechanically. [Pg.108]

A device for measuring very small strains. The electrical type consists of a grid of thin resistance wire suitably attached with adhesive to the surface to be tested the resistance of the wire is proportional to the strain. [Pg.61]

Olafsson [472] described a similar procedure, in which the sample (450 ml) is acidified with nitric acid, aqueous stannous chloride is added, and the mercury is entrained by a stream of argon into a silica tube wound externally with resistance wire and containing pieces of gold foil, on which the mercury is retained. The tube and its contents are then heated electrically to about 320 °C and the vaporised mercury is swept by argon into a 10 cm silica absorption cell in an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a recorder. The absorption (measured at 253.7 nm) is directly proportional to the amount of mercury in the range 0 - 24 ng per sample. [Pg.198]

Resistance to electron flow is measured in ohm units and is symbolized by the letter R. The ohm unit is symbolized by the Greek letter omega (Q). A resistance slows the movement of electrons in a circuit much like a smaller-diameter pipe would slow the movement of water. While all electronic circuit components have a certain resistance, components known as resistors—components that have a certain defined resistance in ohms, kilohms (kO, or 103 Q), or megaohms (MQ, or 106 Q) and are inserted into circuits for their resistance values—are available. These usually are small, cylindrical epoxy or plastic packages with leads (short wires) protruding from each end and small granules of carbon or resistance wire inside to slow the electrons. Resistors are manufactured with different degrees of accuracy. One percent... [Pg.155]

Electric tube furnaces of appropriate dimensions are available from various manufacturers. A model RO 4/25 by Heraeus GmbH, Hanau, FRG is suitable. However, a very satisfactory furnace can be built by any well equipped laboratory workshop at little cost and effort. The material required consists of thin walled ceramic tubing, 3.5 cm i.d., nichrome resistance wire, heat resistant insulation, and ordinary hardware material. A technical drawing will be provided by the submitters upon request. The temperature of the furnace can be adjusted by an electronic temperature controller using a thermocouple sensor. A 1.5 kW-Variac transformer and any high temperature thermometer would do as well for the budget-minded chemist. [Pg.60]
