In order to have an influence on behalf of the interests of the plastics industry, the Association of Plastics Producing Industries, (VKE), is reported to wish to intensify its communication with European political institutions. Standards or specifications issued by individual companies are not considered to be of national status, however large or multi-national the concern might be. This rapid statistical response in reducing mattress smoldering fire losses is gratifying. Yet there is controversy about whether the improvements were caused by the standard or by public education. "Learn Not to Burn" and other educational programs developed by the National Fire Protection Association and the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPl) seem to have been instrumental in increasing public awareness of fire hazards. These should be recognized as effective tools to help the general public prevent and respond to fires.

In the plastics field, ANSI works closely with the society of the plastics industry (SPI) and the society of automotive engineers (SAE) to develop and publish standards for plastics materials, processing equipment, operations, and operating safety. 

NEMA NEMA stands for National Electrical Manufacturers Association. More particularly in the plastics industry, NEMA develops standards for high-presstrre laminates used for electrical applications, which is the first and largest use of these materials. 

There are numerous industry standard laminate constructions, and one of the leading sets of standards is that established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Some of the most commonly used resins are epoxies, polyesters, polyimides, cyanate esters, and phenohcs. Some of the most common reinforcements are paper, glass fiber, glass fabric, and certain plastic fibers and fabrics. 

Among the various lead-free solder alloys, the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) recommends Sn-3.9Ag-0.6Cu ( 0.2%) for reflow soldering (Ref 1), while JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) recommends Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu. Under most typical use conditions, Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloy in general exhibits a greater resistance to creep as compared to Pb-Sn alloy and hence creeps 10 to 100 times slower (Ref 2). The microstructure, the plastic and creep behavior, and the failure mechanism in Sn-Ag-Cu solder are vastly different compared to Pb-Sn solder, and therefore, it is important to develop appropriate thermomechanical predictive models for Sn-Ag-Cu solder.
