Since 1979, elemental concentrations of fine particles have been monitored in remote areas of the United States in networks operated for the National Park Service (NPS) and the EPA (Eldred and Cahill 1994). Lead at all sites decreased sharply through 1986, corresponding to the shift to unleaded gasoline, but has since leveled off at 1-2 ng/m3 (0.001-0.002 pg/m3), which is approximately 18% of the 1982 mean. The elevated lead concentrations (up to 5 ng/m3) since 1986 at three of the twelve sites are probably associated with mining activity. [Pg.408]

The CASTNET provides atmospheric data on the dry deposition component of total acid deposition, ground-level ozone, and other forms of atmospheric pollution. CASTNET is considered the nation s primary source for atmospheric data to estimate dry acidic deposition and to provide data on rural ozone levels. Used in conjunction with other national monitoring networks, CASTNET is used to determine the effectiveness of national emission control programs. Established in 1987, CASTNET now comprises over 70 monitoring stations across the United States. The longest data records are primarily at eastern sites. The majority of the monitoring stations are operated by EPA s Office of Air and Radiation however, approximately 20 stations arc operated by the National Park Service in cooperation with EPA. [Pg.11]

Stitching to an auxiliary support is the least desirable of the methods that have been tried. In one case observed by Toby Raphael (National Parks Service, personal communication, 1985), a tapa garment had to be completely dismantled for the procedure, and stitching was done through the body of the cloth as well as at the edges through the original seams. While this treatment, undertaken at some time in the past, reflects the application of textile techniques to tapa, it is clearly a more interventive treatment than would be recommended today. [Pg.175]

In another setting of heavy DEET use, National Park Service employees in the Everglades National Park used heavy applications of DEET (McConnell et al. 1986). A government study of the workers found that high DEET exposure correlated with insomnia, muscle cramps, mood disturbances, and skin and urinary problems. A second study of the group with neurobehavioral testing correlated heavy DEET use with sleep disturbances, psychic distress, and impaired cognitive function (McConnell et al. 1986 Robbins and Cherniack 1986). [Pg.17]

But there s also a reason that Doug Tompkins thinks Turner could go down in history as his generation s giant of wildlands philanthropy, and that Mike Phillips, who was once the National Park Service s expert on wolves and now works for Turner, says that the founder of CNN, the twenty-four-hour cable news network, has surpassed Rockefeller with a body of conservation work that exceeds any human who has ever lived. ... [Pg.281]

The administration sided with the off-road vehicle industry on air pollution standards, on noise pollution standards, and in giving the vehicles continued access to environmentally sensitive areas in national forests and wilderness areas, ignoring scientific opinions inside and outside government on the damage the vehicles cause, fie also sided with snowmobile manufacturers and industry groups in overruling the National Park Service s scientists and three sepa-... [Pg.321]
