Interventive treatment

Owing to the prohibition of chemosynthetic pesticides under organic farming standards, there is a greatly reduced availability of intervention/treatment-based methods for disease and pest control in organic fruit production systems. The efficacy of the permitted biological control, extract or mineral element (e.g. S and Cu)-based crop protection products is also usually lower than of chemosynthetic pesticides. Permitted plant protection products show efficacies of between 60 and 80% while chemosynthetic fungicides and pesticides often have efficacy levels >95% (Tamm et al., 2004). 

Multiple-risk-factor intervention (treatment of dyslipidemia and hypertension, smoking cessation, antiplatelet therapy) reduces macrovascular events.

Benzimidazoles (mebendazole or albendazole) have been the most used treatment, but a combination of albendazole plus praziquantel may be more effective than a benzimidazole on its own (Mohamed et at., 1998 Ayles et a/., 2002 El-On, 2003). As cimetidine increases benzimidazole serum concentrations it may enhance their activity (Bekhti and Pirotte, 1987 Wen et ai, 1994). Whilst for some patients chemotherapy is the sole treatment, even where there will be surgical intervention, treatment with benzimidazoles is recommended before surgery (Keshmiri et ai, 2001). A range of doses have been used for treatments of patients but 12-15 mg/kg/day over weeks or months may be best, although an emulsion...

Stitching to an auxiliary support is the least desirable of the methods that have been tried. In one case observed by Toby Raphael (National Parks Service, personal communication, 1985), a tapa garment had to be completely dismantled for the procedure, and stitching was done through the body of the cloth as well as at the edges through the original seams. While this treatment, undertaken at some time in the past, reflects the application of textile techniques to tapa, it is clearly a more interventive treatment than would be recommended today. 

Although only a minority of patients with TIA or ischemic stroke are potential candidates for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or stenting, the decision to opt for interventional treatment rather than medical treatment alone can be difficult and is, therefore, given detailed consideration in this Ch. Most of the discussion relates to CEA because far more data are available on the risks and benefits of surgery than for stenting. However, most of the issues discussed are applicable to both procedures. 

As an alternative to percutaneous injection therapy, there is a possibility to develop new local-interventional treatment strategies by selectively exploring the tumourfeeding branch of the proper hepatic artery. 

Last but not least, caution should be applied when extrapolating severe DLT or moribundity observed in toxicology studies to human because in humans intervention/treatment will be immediately applied when DLT is observed to prevent a more serious event. For example, oncologists are very adept in managing the challenge associated with myelosuppression and/or gastrointestinal tract injury that in nonclinical studies would induce a moribund condition.

This chapter will first present the options which are widely used today for slowing the rate of degradation of plastics (inhihitive conservation) and then those for invasively stabilizing and strengthening them (interventive conservation). Interventive treatments are used hy private dealers, collectors and art insurance companies to maintain the commercial value and original appearance of plastics artworks. Some interventive treatments are considered restoration rather than conservation. 

Isolated cases of laparoscopic ovarian vein ligation have been reported [32] however, there are no large series published to date.
