Of the adjustable parameters in the Eyring viscosity equation, kj is the most important. In Sec. 2.4 we discussed the desirability of having some sort of natural rate compared to which rates of shear could be described as large or small. This natural standard is provided by kj. The parameter kj entered our theory as the factor which described the frequency with which molecules passed from one equilibrium position to another in a flowing liquid. At this point we will find it more convenient to talk in terms of the period of this vibration rather than its frequency. We shall use r to symbolize this period and define it as the reciprocal of kj. In addition, we shall refer to this characteristic period as the relaxation time for the polymer. As its name implies, r measures the time over which the system relieves the applied stress by the relative slippage of the molecules past one another. In summary.

In the polymer literature each of the five quantities listed above is encountered frequently. Economic summaries of the cosmetic industry, commonly documented by sales volume, are sometimes based on unit sales, sometimes on manufacturers sales in monetary units, and sometimes on consumer spending. Figures normally include contributions by private labeling operations but do not necessarily reflect the value of the industry service sector, which includes suppHers of raw materials, beauticians, testing laboratories, and other speciaHsts. Moreover, product categories caimot be rigidly defined. For example, the differentiation between a deodorant (a cosmetic) and an antiperspirant (an OTC dmg) is often obscured by its trade name.

We return now to the mercuro-de-diazoniation. Nesmeyanov s school continued the work on metallo-de-diazoniations from 1929 to 1953 (see summary by Nesmeyanov, 1972). A major discovery was made at the very beginning, namely the influence of copper powder (Nesmeyanov, 1929 b Nesmeyanov and Kahn, 1929). With this addition metallic mercury was not required instead the double salt of the diazonium chloride and mercuric chloride was used. The copper reacts stoichiometrically as an electron donor. Therefore, either arylmercuric chlorides (Scheme 10-87) or diarylmercury compounds (Scheme 10-88) can be obtained. These reactions are called Nesmeyanov reactions. Insulin is ordered by die generic name (insulin zinc suspension, extended) or the trade (brand) name (Humulin U) (see the Summary Drug Table Insulin Preparations). The nurse must never substitute one brand of insulin for anodier unless the substitution is approved by the health care provider because some patients may be sensitive to changes in brands of insulin. In addition, it is important never to substitute one type of insulin for anodier. For example, do not use insulin zinc suspension instead of die prescribed protamine zinc insulin.

Incorporating the Kirtas system with the International Plant Names Index and SNOW-MED allows movement of the historic text into an electronic format, identihcation of current plant names, and identihcation of the symptoms treated with the plants. To complete the mining of historic herbal texts for novel drug leads we use the Natural Products Alert (NAPRALERT ) database to compare the information extracted from the historic herbal text to the reports of plant use in the current literature. The NAPRALERT database provides a summary of plants ethnopharmacological use, biochemical activities, and isolated compounds [27]. By querying each plant (with the current plant name) it is possible to identify any reports in the current literature regarding the plant. As an example, Table 4.1 shows the NAPRALERT output for Cycas rumphii. 

In homozygotes, the synthesis of 3-chains is greatly decreased and as a result a severe anemia may develop after birth when the y-chain production ceases, 3-Thalassemla, like thalassemia, is a heterogeneous condition which can be concluded ftom the differences in suppression of 3-chain synthesis. In some cases 3-chain production is completely absent (the 3 type) wher. as, in others, a considerable 3-chain synthesis can be observed (the 3 type). The severe anemia will lead, by a mechanism which is still not completely understood, to an increased production of y-chains.
