MSDS sheets

According to EPCRA, facilities should provide either an MSDS or a list of chemicals to the SERC, LEPC, and local fire department. If facilities choose to supply only a list, the list should include specific information including health hazards, fire hazards, reactivity hazards, and physical data for every chemical on the list. Although only a list is required, the additional requirements for specific information makes the submission of only a list a rare occurrence. The use of MSD sheets is one of the most commonly used tools to convey this information.

An MSDS sheet serves as a reference source for information on a hazardous substance. Tlie MSDS sheet identifies the substance, identifies die producer or seller of die substance, the location of die producer or seller, explains why the substance is hazardous, explains how a person can be exposed to die substance, identifies conditions that increase the hazard, explains safe handling procedures, identifies proper protective clothing or devices to be used when working with die substance, explains the steps dial should be taken if a person is exposed to die substance, and explains die steps dial should be taken if there is a spill or emergency situation. 

There are a variety of chemicals that are toxic and used in the drilling fluid makeup. Chromates and asbestos were once commonly used and are now off the market. A mud inventory should be kept for all drilling additives. Included in the inventory are the material safety data sheets (MSDS) that describe each material s pertinent characteristics. The chemicals found on the MSDS sheet should be compared with the priority pollutants and any material should be eliminated if a match is found. The chemicals should also be checked on arrival for breakage and returned to the vendor if defective packaging is found. All mud additives should be housed in a dry area and properly cared for to prevent waste. Chemicals should always be mixed in packaged proportions. Wasted chemicals, ejected to the reserve pit by untrained personnel, can present future liabilities to the operator.

TS D employees have a product stewardship responsibility for the products Dow manufactures and sells. As part of their stewardship activities they should obtain and communicate pertinent reactive chemicals hazard information to handlers and users of Dow products. They should also make sure that the MSDS sheets for their products reflect the current reactive chemicals test data.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) A document, required by OSHA (U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations, that provides a thorough profile of a potentially hazardous substance or product. The MSDS profile includes recommendations of how to handle the product, as well as how to treat a person who swallows the product, gets the product in the eyes or is otherwise overexposed. Manufacturers of such products, such as cleansers, solvents and coatings, provide these MSDS sheets at no cost to customers and end users. 

Employers using these substances in the workplace are required to have MSDS sheets on hand. 

When dispersed as a dust, adipic acid is subject to normal dust explosion hazards. See Table 3 for ignition properties of such dust—air mixtures. The material is an irritant, especially upon contact with the mucous membranes. Thus protective goggles or face shields should be worn when handling the material. Prolonged contact with the skin should also be avoided. Eye wash fountains, showers, and washing facilities should be provided in work areas. However, MSDS Sheet 400 (5) reports that no acute or chronic effects have been observed.

T19.9 Protiodide was a medical trade name for mercury(I) iodide, Hg2l2. Various sources can be used to summarize the side-effects and overdose risks, such as MSDS sheets. Sweetman, S.C. (ed.). Mariindale The Complete Drug Reference, published by Pharmaceutical Press, could also be a good source for the toxicity and effects of inorganic mercury salts. 

All new chemical substances undergo registration by testing of their toxic properties dependent on a certain annual volume being produced, which is quite costly and prevents a high number of new initiators. In the MSDS sheets the producer refers to the registration if pending. 

Obtain MSD Sheets or if not available, contact the Industrial Hygienist. Review the characteristics of all reactants, intermediates and products in terms of flammability, toxicity and reactivity hazards. Where information is not available, treat the materials as hazardous. 

Since we are a consulting firm, many of our clients come to us with problems relating to consumer products that can be found in and around the home, including toothpaste, shampoo, food products, and the like. The scavenger hunt activity identifies a number of chemicals that we often have needed in our stock and that can be found in a number of these consumer products. It then asks you to find a consumer product in which each chemical is found and investigate the various information sources and find the answer to some questions about these chemicals. You will notice that the activity calls for you to look up the MSDS sheet and find certain specific information. This also gives you valuable experience with the MSDS sheet. You may use the MSDS sheets found in the lab or look them up on the Internet. 

Consult MSDS sheets for specific handling issues and questions. 

As items are pulled from the shelves, the bar code is scanned, and the retrieval is downloaded into the database. The inventory accounting and warehouse space allocation are adjusted accordingly. MSDS sheets, customer invoices, and bills of lading can be automatically generated. 

The vehicle used to transport the used battery must be correctly identified following international conventions and local legislation. The appropriate symbols and colors should be used to identify the fact that corrosive, hazardous waste is being transported. A complete Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should also be visible, either attached to the side of the used battery stack or inside the transport vehicle. Appendix 1 contains a sample MSDS sheet, for illustration purposes only.
