Motor oil additives

J. R. Ganc and R. Nagarajan, Aggregation Behavior of Common Motor Oil Additives, in International Fuels and Lubricants Meeting, Toronto, Canada, 1991. [Pg.498]

The homopolymer finds a variety of uses, as an adhesive component, as a base for chewing gum, in caulking compounds, as a tackifier for greases, in tank linings, as a motor oil additive to provide suitable viscosity characteristics and to improve the environmental stress-cracking resistance of polyethylene. It has been incorporated in quantities of up to 30% in high-density polyethylene to improve the impact strength of heavy duty sacks. [Pg.270]

And the other isomer, the 4,5-dimethoxy-2-methyl counterpart, became known familiarly as F-320, or sometimes simply 2-DOM. Its preparation followed an identical procedure, starting from 3,4-dimethoxytoluene. I have been told that F-310 is not active even at 20 milligrams in man, which would make it several times less potent than DOM (STP). I know of no trials with F-320. The use of the letter F does not imply any relationship between these two compounds and the series described elsewhere with the F code followed by other numbers, such as F-2 and F-22. These latter are F s because they are furans, not motor oil additives. And yet another oil additive, well known at the time as Z-7, became associated with the synthesis of the DOM (STP) isomer with its groups in the 2,4,6-positions. This is entered separately under t /-DOM. [Pg.96]

Aryl halide derivatives of benzene and toluene have many uses in chemical synthesis as pesticides and raw materials for pesticides manufacture, solvents, and a diverse variety of other applications. These widespread uses over many decades have resulted in substantial human exposure and environmental contamination. Three example aryl halides are shown in Figure 1.17. Monochlorobenzene is a flammable liquid boiling at 132°C. It is used as a solvent, heat transfer fluid, and synthetic reagent. Used as a solvent, 1,2-dichlorobenzene is employed for degreasing hides and wool. It also serves as a synthetic reagent for dye manufacture. Bromobenzene is a liquid boiling at 156°C that is used as a solvent, motor oil additive, and intermediate for organic synthesis. [Pg.48]

Hexachlorobenzene (perchlorobenzene) is a high-melting solid consisting of white needles and used as a seed fungicide, wood preservative, and intermediate for organic synthesis. Bromobenzene (fp, -31°C bp, 156°C) serves as a solvent and motor oil additive, as well as an intermediate for organic synthesis. Most l-chloro-2-methylbenzene is consumed in the manufacture of 1-chloroben-zotrifluoride. [Pg.352]

Applications Magnesium sulfate is utilized in the potassium chemicals industry for the manufacture of potassium sulfate (from potassium chloride), sodium sulfate and potash magnesia (potassium magnesium sulfate). Magnesium sulfate, particularly as kieserite, is used as a fertilizer (ca. 80% of total consumption). It is also used in the textile industry, in the manufacture of building and refractory materials, in the pulp industry and in the production of animal feedstuffs and motor oil additives. [Pg.237]

Use Plasticizer for cellulose acetate intermediate for antioxidants, special starches, oil-soluble phenolic resins pour-point depressors and emulsion breakers for petroleum oils and some plastics synthetic lubricants insecticides industrial odorants motor-oil additives. [Pg.203]

Magnesium overbase sulfonates are used primarily as a motor oil additive where they act to neutralize acidic by-products formed during the combustion process. This helps to reduce corrosion of the internal surfaces of engine components and also reduce the formation of sludge, which are also highly acidic (Spearot, 1974). [Pg.218]
