Specialty cleaners solvents

The high boiling point, increased solvency and low surface tension of 3M HFE-7100 make it suitable for use in vapor degreasing applications as a neat (pure), azeotropic or co-solvent parts cleaner. In addition, its chemical and thermal stability, non-flammability and low toxicity make it useful for other industrial applications such as specialty solvent and heat transfer applications. 

Solvents, predominately the glycol ethers, are used somewhat in these specialty cleaners. In cases like soap scum, where it is an organic soil capable of softening, the glycol ethers are useful. They serve less use in removing inorganic soils like hard water deposit, where attack by acidity is far more effective. Alcohols are also sometimes used, especially in products like the shower sprays, where the soil load is light. Alcohols could also be used to adjust the viscosity of some cleaners. Solvents are also used in wipes formulas to help speed both the action of the cleaner on the surface (since it has to work essentially within the time of a swipe) and in the evaporation of the cleaner on the surface, since these are no-rinse products. 

Uses. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is of interest in chemical and related industries where low toxicity and minimal environmental impact are important (134). For many years tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol has been used as a specialty organic solvent. The fastest growing appHcations are in formulations for cleaners (135) and paint strippers (136), often as a replacement for chlorinated solvents (137). Other major appHcations include formulations for crop sprays, water-based paints, and the dyeing and finishing of textiles and leathers. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol also finds appHcation as an intermediate in pharmaceutical appHcations. 

A moderately hydrophilic emulsifier and lubricant, is used as an emulsifier for solvents in pesticide carriers and metal cleaners. In the textile industry it is used in the formulation of specialty detergents and dyeing assistants. It is also used as an emulsifier for neatsfoot oil in leather fat liquoring and as a rewetting agent for paper. 

Use Disinfectants, textile specialties, wetting and flotation agents, special solvents, household and industrial cleaners, odorants. 

Window cleaners constitute a specialty within the solvent cleaner category. Because any residue left on glass after drying leads to streaking or an otherwise undesirable appearance, these products are highly dilute aqueous solutions containing extremely low surfactant levels — most often nonionic surfactants — and a combination of glycol ethers and isopropyl alcohol as the solvent system.
