The sandwich-type stmcture of polyurethanes with a smooth integral skin produced by the reaction injection molding process provides a high degree of stiffness as weU as exceUent thermal and acoustical properties necessary for its use in housing and load-bearing stmctural components for the automotive, business machine, electrical, furniture, and materials-handling industry. [Pg.416]

Resistance to puncture is another type of loading. It is of particular interest in applications involving sheet and film as well as thin-walled tubing or molding and other membrane type loaded structures. Hie surface skins of sandwich panels are another area where it is important. A localized force is applied by a relatively sharp object perpendicular to the plane of the sheet of material being stressed. If the material is thick compared to the area of application of the stress, it is effectively a localized compression stress with some shear effects as the material is deformed below the surface of the sheet. [Pg.93]

Figure 3.72 [27] presents the various types of foams and their corresponding characteristic density distributions. In integral foam, the unfoamed skin surrounds the foamed inner core. This type of foam can be produced by injection molding and extrusion and it replaces the sandwiched structure also shown in Fig. 3.72. [Pg.165]

Some special types of foams are (1) structural foams (2) syntactic foams and multifoams and (3) reinforced foams. Structural foams (Figure 2.58c and d), which possess full-density skins and cellular cores, are similar to structural sandwich constructions or to human bones, which have solid surfaces but cellular cores. Structural foams may be manufactured by high pressure processes or by low-pressure processes (Figure 2.61). The first one may provide denser, smoother skins with greater fidelity to fine detail in the mold than maybe true of low-pressure processes. Fine wood detail, for example, is used for simulated wood furniture and simulated wood beams. Surfaces made by low-pressure processes may, however, show swirl or other textures, not necessarily detracting from their usefulness. Almost any thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer can be formulated into a structural foam. [Pg.240]

Flex interposer-based CSPs. This CSP type uses a flexible circuit having solder balls or metal bumps as an interconnect interposer between the chip and the next circuit board level. The bare chip is attached facedown and wire-bonded to the interposer. A thin elastomer, sandwiched between the chip and interposer, cushions the chip and the solder-ball interconnects, relieving stresses (see Fig. 1.13). The interposer generally consists of a metallized, flexible polyimide tape on which are formed electrical connections by photolithographic processes. As a final step, the exposed wire bonds and edges of the chip are molded with epoxy. [Pg.18]

Another type of stiffener is shown in Figs. 8-7 and 8-8. In this case the basic sheet of the part is converted to a series of connected I or T beams. While this construction is not as efficient as the sandwich panel, it does have the advantage that it can be molded or extruded directly in the required configuration and the relative proportions of the legs and sheet can be designed to meet the flexural requirements. One of the limitations is that it imparts increased stiffness in one direction much more than in the other. [Pg.131]

Continuous lamination is another open-mold process. In this method resin is doctored onto a film of cellophane or poly(vinyl alcohol) and glass mat or chopped rovings placed on top of the resin. A second film is then placed on top of this, and the sandwich obtained is passed through rollers, which compact and remove air. They can also shape, as with corrugated type laminates. After removal from the press, the mold or picture frame sandwich is allowed to cool before opening (using brass implements). It is, therefore, useful to have several picture frame molds of comparable dimensions. The best precision in physical property measurement is obtained by allowing the molded sheet to relax at room temperature for a set period of time, often 24 hours. After opening the mold, the sample should be observed for evidence of surface bleed from excess external lubricant. (With compounds intended for metal adhesion, it may be necessary to use an external mold release coating. Those based on FIFE are effective with vinyl compounds and tend not to interfere with subsequent testing.
