Chopped roving

By far the most common form of reinforcement is fiberglass. Products using unsaturated polyester resin as a matrix and fiberglass fiber reinforcements are commonly referred to as composites , laminates or FRPs (fiber-reinforced plastics). The latter reinforcements are sold as continuous roving, which is continuously chopped in place with a liquid resin stream, chopped roving mat, woven... [Pg.707]

A combination of chopped roving and preform may also be used. The use of PUR gives a wide range of properties, extending towards elastomeric (for parts such as automobile fenders or bumper beams) and introduces cellular/foam forms. [Pg.354]

Cylindrical shapes such as pipe, tubing, and tanks can be made by placing chopped-strand mat and/or directional chopped rovings against the inner wall of a hollow mold (such as a cylinder, etc.). The mold is heated and... [Pg.278]

Generally the glass reinforcement used consists of chopped strand mat with a soluble polyester powder binder or chopped rovings deposited directly into the resin film. However, for certain applications woven fabrics... [Pg.238]

Mats are the cheapest form of planar reinforcements but are more expensive than unidirectional rovings. They are made by chopping rovings into short lengths and assembling them into a handleable mat with a binder which may be insoluble or soluble in water. The latter should be avoided for applications where water immersion is foreseen as this can be the cause of osmosis effects and lead to loss of composite integrity. Thermoplastic binders are also used to allow mats to be formed into shaped preforms for... [Pg.291]

Continuous lamination is another open-mold process. In this method resin is doctored onto a film of cellophane or poly(vinyl alcohol) and glass mat or chopped rovings placed on top of the resin. A second film is then placed on top of this, and the sandwich obtained is passed through rollers, which compact and remove air. They can also shape, as with corrugated type laminates. The sandwich is then passed through a heat source for curing. [Pg.882]
