Moisturizing lotion

A-Nitrosodiethanolamine at levels of 600-7386 ppb was detected in 11 samples of cosmetics in the United States which included hand creams, face creams, shampoos, cocoa butter cream, moisturizing lotion and a make-up remover (all products listed diethanolamine and/or triethanolamine as ingredients) (Tunick etal., 1982). TV-Nitroso-diethanolamine was found in all seven cosmetic formulations one with traces (< 10 ng/g) and six at levels of 41 7 000 ng/g and in 12 of 13 lotions (seven with traces <10 ng/g and five with 14-140 ng/g) and in eight of nine hair shampoos (three with traces < 10 ng/g and live with 17-280 ng/g) in the United States (Fan et al., 1977b). Of 191 cosmetics analysed, 77 contained from 10 to more than 2000 ppb N-nitrosodiethanolamine (Elder, 1980). Westin etal. (1990) analysed 20 different suntan lotions in Israel and found that three were contaminated with 17-27 ppb TV-nitroso-diethanolamine (with traces 5-10 ppb).

U.S. 5,387,417 describes the formulation of a moisturizing lotion and the preparation of the emulsifying agent. Estimate the cost of production of each of the lotion formulations given in the patent. 

In many parts of the world, it is common practice to release treated wastewater to inland waterways. As a result, many pharmaceuticals (such as antibiotics and hormonal medicines) and personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, and moisturizing lotions (e.g., substances containing phenols and phthalates), are present in drinking water sources. These have relatively recently become an important issue for the drinking water industry as many are known to disrupt the endocrine systems of animals, including humans.

Polyacrylamide is used in a wide range of cosmetic products such as moisturizers, lotions, creams, self-tanning products, etc. Polyacrylamides were first used as an implantable carrier for sustained delivery of insulin to lengthen the life of diabetic rats. Since then, various drug delivery systems based on polyacrylamide have been developed. It is also used as a carrier for other bioactive macromolecules and cells to produce the desired effects. Polyacrylamide-chitosan hydrogels are biocompatible and are used for sustained antibiotic release. Polyacrylamide is also used in extra corporeal toxin-removing devices, which remove unwanted toxic substances and subsequently returns the detoxified component to the circulation effectively. The function of polyacrylamide in an extracorporeal toxin removal modality is to provide a support matrix for immobilization of the functional parts or ligands.

When talking about consumer products the selection of ingredients to use in formulations is a particular safety interest given the potential direct contact with consumers, for instance, in skin care or personal hygiene products. In this case we are not reacting chemicals, but we are forming emulsions or other types of mixtures that would become a formulated product such as a cream or an ointment, for example, diaper rash cream, moisturizing lotions, antibacterial ointments, sunscreens, and others. 

Talc can be handled and used safely provided reasonable workplace practices are observed. Skin contact is generally of minimal concern, except that continuous exposure can dry the skin because talc will absorb the skin s natural oils. To prevent inadvertent skin contact, wash the gloves with soap and water before taking them off and then washing the hands, drying, and using moisturizer/lotion on the hands.
