Polishing agents

Tripoh is a mild abrasive and polishing agent from porous rocks near TripoH. 

Zirconium siUcate [10101 -52-7] is a polishing agent with the unique characteristic of gradually reducing its abrasive capabiUty during use. Its high coarseness when first appHed permits it to cut rapidly. 

Fillers. Diatomite mineral fillers are used primarily (/) where bulk is needed with minimum weight increase, (2) as an extender where economy of more expensive ingredients is a factor, or (3) where the stmcture of the particle is important. In other appHcations, diatomite can add strength, toughness, and resistance to abrasion, or it can act as a mild abrasive and polishing agent (see Abrasives). 

Stannic oxide (SnO ) is a whitish powder used as a ceramic glaze and polishing agent. 

The high hardness of chromium oxide resulting from its crystal structure is exploited in polishing agents for metals and in brake linings. Addition of a small amount of chromium oxide to magnetic materials of audio and video tapes imparts a self-cleaning effect to the sound heads.

The family is cosmopolitan except for Australia and New Zealand. The majority of the species are tropical to subtropical. Equise-tum is known as the scouring rush for its former use as a polishing agent due to the accumulation of silica in the tissues.
