Karathane A trade name for 2,4-dinitro-6-( 1 -methylheptyl)phenyl crotonate, CJ8H24N2O6, a compound which has both acaricidal and fungicidal activity. It is a red-brown oil of high boiling point, insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. Karathane is used for the control of powdery mildew, and is nontoxic to mammals. [Pg.230]

FWWMR Finish. The abbreviation for fire, water, weather, and mildew resistance, FWWMR, has been used to describe treatment with a chlorinated organic metal oxide. Whereas semigloss paints can use only one extender, dat paints, especially interior, can use combinations of three or more. Gloss paints typically do not use extenders, which decrease gloss. As a result, gloss paints lack the hardening effect of extenders and must rely on harder binders for adequate durabihty. Other types of extenders used in paints can have functional properties such as corrosion resistance, mildew resistance, and film-hardening effects. Calcium Hypochlorite. High assay calcium hypochlorite [7778-54-3] was first commercialized in the United States in 1928 by Mathieson Alkali Works, Inc. (now Olin Corp.) under the trade name HTH. It is now produced by two additional manufacturers in North America (Table 5). Historically, it usually contained about 1% water and 70—74% av CI2, so-called anhydrous product, but in 1970, a hydrated product was introduced (234). It is similar in composition to anhydrous Ca(OCl)2 except for its higher water content of about 6—12% and a slightly lower available chlorine content. This product has improved resistance to accidental initiation of self-sustained decomposition by a Ht match, a Ht cigarette, or a small amount of organic contamination. U.S. production in the 1990s consists primarily of partially hydrated Ca(OCl)2, which is sold as a 65% av CI2 product mainly for swimming pool use. Calcium hypochlorite is also sold as a 50% av CI2 product as a sanitizer used by dairy and food industries and in the home, and as a 32% product for mildew control. [Pg.473]

Boron, as barium metaborate, is marketed as a mildew preventative for paints (273). Borax is used as a wood preservative, and an organic boron, 2,2 -(l-methyltrimethylenedioxy)-bis(4,4,6-trimethyl)-l,3,2-dioxaborinane (Biobor JF) [14697-50-80] is a biocide for jet fuel (274).
