To answer these questions, two good metrics of the industry are presented here that focus on macro factors, rather than micro business conditions and... 

As can be seen from Table 1, summary characteristics of the case studies spanned a variety of business types, from micro businesses to large international organisations and covered a range of sectors including manufacturing, service organisations and retail. Two public sector organisations were included. 

Micro-scaling or bottom up approach to quality costs, where it is possible to calculate the cost of losses involved in manufacture and due to returns and/or claims. This method requires a great deal of experience and relies on the availability of detailed cost data throughout a product s life-cycle. While this is a crucial activity for a business, it is also not a practical approach for estimating the quality cost for product in the early stages of product development.

The development of start-up companies in the field of micro-systems technology, including microfluidics, has been reviewed by Wicht et al. [244]. Different types of business models are presented as well as the corresponding growth models. The development of start-ups in Germany in the last 10 years is presented and the product offer is discussed. This is compared with the situation in other European countries. Finally, information on problems and opportimities for the start-ups is provided. 

This is also (see [R 6]) a commercial chip ( Radiator ), provided by MCS, Micro Chemical Systems Ltd., The Deep Business Center [20]. A bottom plate contains an extensively wound serpentine channel. A top plate covers this microstructure. The two reactant solutions enter via capillary tubing through holes in the top plate. The first reactant is fed at the start of the serpentine path and the second enters this path in a short distance. Shortly before the end of the serpentine, a third stream can enter which may serve, e.g., for dilution and thus quenching of the reaction. After a very short passage, the diluted streams enter via a fourth port analytics. Commercially available capillary connectors were employed. 

Centralized electrification requires massive amounts of capital [10]. The dispersed nature of houses and low potential demand create little incentive for power companies to provide access to rural areas. In addition, extending the grid may be unrealistic due to transmission line costs or hard terrain [5]. Thus, in rural areas, off-grid and mini-grid solutions make the most sense. Such systems can consist of a single home or several small homes and businesses. The systems can be incremental and scalable and applied to many different conditions and environments [10]. Off-grid and mini-grid options for renewable electricity include solar, wind, clean biomass, and micro-hydro. These options for renewable power will be discussed in more detail below. 

On the micro-economic level, simple company value chains consisting of buying products to optionally make other products out of it, to distribute and sell these products with a margin to customers become complex networks with globally spread out locations. Globally operating companies face the task to manage volumes and values in this network in a profitable way to ensure competitiveness and business sustainability.

When we arrived at Mt. Shasta, Buck s number one assistant was Clive Countryman, an expert in micro-meteorology and the associated measurements. He was a very quiet fellow but quite smart and 100% devoted to business. He stuttered rather badly which added to his quiet demeanor. Ruben, recognizing his worth, hired him immediately.
