Amyl methyl ether

Ethers, such as MTBE and methyl / -amyl ether (TAME) are made by a catalytic process from methanol (qv) and the corresponding isomeric olefin. These ethers have excellent octane values and compete on an economic basis with alkylation for inclusion in gasoline. Another ether, ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is made from ethanol (qv) and isobutylene (see Butylenes). The cost and economic driving forces to use ETBE vs MTBE or TAME are a function of the raw material costs and any tax incentives that may be provided because of the ethanol that is used to produce it. 

In this experiment/ Williamson wrote, "the two theories cross one another, and must lead to different results," with the actual result demonstrating the ideas of Gerhardt and Laurent. He underlined the point even more strongly by preparing additional novel asymmetric ethers, namely ethyl-amyl ether and methyl-amyl ether. Some isopentane is dehydrogenated to isoamylene and converted, by processes analogous to those which produce methyl /-butyl ether [1634-04-4] (MTBE) to /-amyl methyl ether [994-05-8] (TAME), which is used as a fuel octane enhancer like MTBE. The amount of TAME which the market can absorb depends mostly on its price relative to MTBE, ethyl /-butyl ether [637-92-3] (ETBE), and ethanol, the other important oxygenated fuel additives. 

The physical properties of finish removers vary considerably due to the diverse uses and requirements of the removers. Finish removers can be grouped by the principal ingredient of the formula, method of appHcation, method of removal, chemical base, viscosity, or hazardous classification. Except for method of apphcation, a paint remover formulation usually has one aspect of each group, by which it can be used for one or more appHcations. This method has been used for the preparation of the somewhat more hindered 2-methyl-2-butyl ether (/-amyl ether) the introduction is selective for primary alcohols. ...
