Another form of failure for some materials is creep. Creep is a very slow, but permanent deformation of a material imder load. Some plastic materials are subject to creep failures. The cross-sectional area of a part may change and weaken the part as a result of creep. Another example is aluminum electrical wire. During a shortage of copper in the late 1970s, manufacturers substituted solid aluminum for solid copper in some electrical wiring applications. Tight connector screws became loose later as the local load of the connector on the aluminum wire caused creep in the aluminum material. That does not occur for copper wires. In some cases the loose connections for aluminum wires eventually led to arcing and fire. [Pg.104]

Quality Control. Reproducible production of perfumes requires careful quality control of all materials used as well as the compounding process itself. The replacement of asbestos fibers by other fibrous materials has raised similar health issues in relation to substitute materials. The national pressure vessel codes and standards require that all pressure vessels be subjected to a pressure test to prove the integrity of the finished vessel. A hydraulic test is normally carried out, but a pneumatic test can be substituted under circumstances where the use of a liquid for testing is not practical. Hydraulic tests are safer because only a small amount of energy is stored in the compressed liquid. A standard pressure test is used when the required thickness of the vessel parts can be calculated in accordance with the particular code or standard. The vessel is tested at a pressure above the design pressure, typically 25 to 30 per cent. The test pressure is adjusted to allow for the difference in strength of the vessel material at the test temperature compared with the design temperature, and for any corrosion allowance. [Pg.872]
